Position Title: Spreader/Layup Lead

Reports To: Spreader/Layup Supervisor

Department: Spreader/Layup

Hours per shift: 10 plus 

Wage: Hourly Level 5/6

Position Purpose: Assist supervisor or general foreman in the Layup operations on a daily/shift basis. Break machine operators for purpose of keeping production flowing.

Position Functions:

Essential Functions*

These duties are designated as ADA Essential Functions and must be performed in this job.

Utilize action planning to facilitate continuous improvement.

Assist in spreader set up for startups and changeovers.

Responsible for monitoring, checking and correcting glue spreads every hour.

Help train new and experienced employees to improve their job skills to enhance quality and productivity.

Knows and understands quality management system being used at facility.

Assist department supervisor/general foreman in directing employees in their daily safety, production and quality duties.

Assist department supervisor/general foreman in daily, weekly and monthly safety training.

Assist department supervisor/general foreman in product scheduling.

Assist department supervisor/general foreman in crew breaks and meal periods.

Assist department supervisor/general foreman in production paperwork and inventory control.

Assist department supervisor/general foreman to complete employee daily, 30/90 day and yearly evaluations.

Assist department supervisor/general foreman to complete all administrative duties and recordkeeping as outlined by the plant manager and HR department.

Assist department supervisor/general foreman in responsibility for cleanup activity during shift and between shifts.

Assist department supervisor/general foreman in responsibility for all safety occurrences being entered into BasicSafe and initiation of IIT.

Assist department supervisor/general foreman in pre-shift meetings to discuss assignments and plan for the shift.

Assist maintenance personnel or coordinate employee assistance in basic maintenance procedures.

Must learn to run department specific machinery for purpose of giving breaks to the regular operators or possibly covering entire shift if necessary.

Learn optimization systems in department.  Utilize these systems to help improve mill profitability.

Assist department supervisor/general foreman in setting/adjusting sizes on machine centers by making adjustments to machine center program parameters.

Assist department supervisor/general foreman in disciplinary process.

Take the lead in safety.  Assist department supervisor/general foreman to verify adequate safety training, coaching and proper tools to safely do the job has been completed.  Promote safety awareness.  Ensure proper use of lockout/tagout/retry and PPE.  Encourage good housekeeping.  Respond to employee and safety committee safety concerns in a timely manner.

Other duties as assigned.

 

 

Non-Essential Functions*


Some out-of-town training may be required.

 

Working Environment: (1) Inside 90% of the time; average temperature 65 degrees, high 100 degrees, and low 40 degrees. Outside 10% of the time; average temperature 65 degrees, high 100 degrees, and low 30 degrees. (2) Noise or Vibration: to include machines being operated as well as other machines close by including forklifts. (3) Atmospheric conditions: Fumes: none, Dust: present, Mist: water, Odors: dry veneer and glue, Gasses: none, Poor ventilation: none.

Personal Protective Equipment Required: (1) Eye Protection. (2) Hearing Protection. (3) Approved Footwear. (4) Gloves. (5) High Visibility Clothing. (When entering and exiting mill or while out on the floor)

Physical Demands: See attached Physical Capacities Evaluation. (1) Stand or walk for 90% of shift. Sit for 10% of shift. (2) Use shoulders, arms, hands, and wrists to pull veneer QC checks. (3) Occasionally lift panels that weigh up to <50 lbs.

Skills: (1) Working knowledge of all glue systems, spreaders and presses. (2) Computer skills: experience with Excel, Word, and presentation software (PowerPoint). (3)      Excellent communication skills; both written and verbal with all levels of the company from hourly, supervisors, vendors, and management. Communication needs to be direct without being confrontational and needs to accurately assess areas in need of improvement without exaggerating the gravity of the issue. (4) Analytical skills: experience utilizing Quality Systems, statistical sampling, and utilizing data to see trends. (5) Training skills: Ability to train, educate foreman, supervisors, leads and employees. Present training and education via job guides, SOP’s, and/or PowerPoint presentations. (6) Tools: proficient with micrometer, tape measure and panel knife for purpose of checking bond quality. (7) Ability to work with little supervision. Must be self-directed in identifying and efficiently completing each task.

Safety Features: (1) Use proper PPE (gloves, eye protection, hearing protection, approved footwear, safety vest). (2) Knowledge and understanding of company safety policies. This includes safety policies for visitors. (3) Knowledge and understanding of company Lockout/Tagout/Retry procedures. (4) Ability to recognize unsafe behaviors in employees and supervisors.
