Overview:
Performs journeyman tasks in the painting, decorating, sign making, and refinishing of building interiors and exteriors and other structures, equipment, and furnishings; may instruct, or supervise apprentices.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Prepares interior or exterior walls, metal surfaces, floors, ceilings, and equipment for painting including taping and finishing drywall.
- Applies paint, shellac, varnish, enamel, stain, or other protective to prepared surfaces using brush, spray, cloth, or other means.
- Designs and fabricates facility and Capitol Complex signage for the entire state.
- Applies sizing materials.
- Removes soiled or excess paint; glazes windows.
- Prepares and applies patching plaster as needed.
- May instruct and supervise apprentice painters.
- Performs other duties as required or assigned.
Requires successful completion of a union sponsored apprenticeship training program to qualify as a journeyman painter.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Requires working knowledge of the tools, materials, methods and standard practices of the trade.
- Requires ability to make simple mathematical computations in estimating area of surfaces to be painted.
- Requires ability to instruct and direct unskilled workers.
- Requires ability to blend paints and match colors.
- Requires ability to interpret and work from verbal or written specifications.
- Requires skill in the use of the tools of the trade.
- Requires willingness to travel and possession of valid Illinois driver’s license as required by individual positions within the class.
- Requires the ability to lift 0 – 90 lbs.; carry, push/pull up to 50 lbs.
