Position Overview

The Illinois Department of Children and Family Services is seeking an organized, professional, and energetic individual to serve as Mail Messenger.  Under general supervision, this position will pick up and deliver U.S. and inter-office mail from various downtown locations and serve as receiving officer for certified, registered, and express mail.  The position will take action to ensure the receipt, transport, and delivery of the Department’s security mail and materials and will sort, label, package, and distribute Department communications to staff.  This position provides a great opportunity for someone who is detail oriented and interested in playing a supporting role in the Department’s operations.  DCFS offers a competitive compensation plan, excellent benefits, and a pension program.  The ideal candidate for this position will have excellent organizational skills and strong communication skills.  We invite you to join our innovative team to help make a positive difference in the lives of the children and families of Illinois.

Essential Functions

  • Serves as Mail Messenger
  • Exercises independent judgment and takes action to ensure the receipt, transport, and delivery of the Department’s security mail and materials
  • Sorts, labels, packages, and distributes Department communications to staff, including memoranda, rules and procedures, information transmittals, etc.
  • Receives office supply shipments from vendors
  • Performs inventory as requested
  • Assembles packages and transports heavy volumes of stored goods and materials
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above

Minimum Qualifications

  • Requires knowledge, skill, and mental development equivalent to completion of high school
  • Requires 1 year of office experience

Conditions of Employment

  • Requires ability to pass a background check
  • Requires ability to travel in the performance of duties. Requires appropriate, valid driver’s license
  • Requires the physical ability to operate a loaded two wheel hand dolly and an electric pallet jack
  • Requires the ability to operate a computer terminal and UPS and USPS mailing and posting equipment, including a satellite-based tracking system
  • This position is considered heavy work as defined by the U.S. Department of Labor (20 CFR 404.1567(d). Heavy work involves lifting no more than 100 pounds at a time with frequent lifting or carrying of objects weighing up to 50 pounds
  • Requires hand dexterity and ability to speak and communicate effectively
