Summary
Daily activities are coordinated by the Registered Nurse (RN). The PCT performs a variety of technical tasks and bedside care functions. Responsibilities include— but are not limited to—direct patient care (hygiene, skin care, mobility, and monitoring). The PCT is expected to maintain multi-skilled capabilities needed on the unit, including duties related to phlebotomy and EKGs. Additionally, the PCT manages equipment and assists with all unit procedures. Other similar and related duties may be assigned as needed.
Job Responsibilities
Provide age-appropriate care to patients
Demonstrates knowledge of developmental stages and applies appropriate care strategies across age groups.
Monitor basic physiological parameters
Records routine vital signs within required timeframes.
Documents weights, heights, abdominal girths, and head circumferences (Pediatrics) per orders.
Reports significant deviations in vital signs and changes in drainage patterns promptly.
Administer treatments and procedures per BMC policy
Performs dressing changes within required timeframes.
Provides post-mortem care per Baystate Health policy.
Completes procedures from the nursing procedure manual as assigned.
Assists physicians and verifies patient identity before procedures.
Assist with elimination needs
Responds promptly to patient requests.
Labels and sends urine, feces, and sputum specimens on time.
Measures and records intake/output per policy.
Administers enemas or Harris Drips as ordered.
Perform Point-of-Care (POC) testing
Support ancillary services
Follows treatment plans and documents care accurately.
Monitors patient condition and reports unexpected findings.
Provides relevant observations to RN.
Communicate effectively
Interacts respectfully with patients and families.
Communicates clearly with the care team and demonstrates cultural sensitivity.
Initiate emergency procedures
Responds appropriately and maintains patient safety during emergencies.
Communicates effectively with appropriate personnel.
Function as a team member
Assists team members with clinical and non-clinical tasks.
Provides feedback and contributes to a positive team environment.
Maintain required competencies
Completes and maintains all required competencies for assigned career ladder level.
Provide one-to-one observation
Demonstrates competency in patient observation based on unit needs.
Qualifications
This position is part of a career ladder. Hiring level is determined by Recruitment based on experience and qualifications.
Level I
Preferred: PCT or CNA training
Level II
Required: At least one year of patient care experience (long-term care, specialty care, acute care, etc.)
Level III
Education: High School Diploma or GED
Required:
Three or more years of patient care experience
OR one year as a Level II PCT at Baystate Health
Preferred: CNA
Level IV
Education: High School Diploma or GED
Required:
Four or more years of acute or specialty-specific care experience
OR one year as a Level III PCT at Baystate Health
Preferred: CNA
