About the role

  • The Animal Caretaker is responsible for caring for a variety of animals which may include rodents, fish, frogs, birds, and possibly more. The work includes feeding, cleaning, monitoring animal health, and maintaining a safe and sanitary environment. The ideal candidate is reliable, attentive to detail, and comfortable working with a variety of animals.


Qualifications

  • Must be able to work most weekdays and at least one weekend day per week.
  • Must be able to work independently and complete assigned tasks without supervision.
  • Ability to communicate well with others  
  • Must be responsible and dependable.
  • Must be a current student at Bethel University.
  • Previous experience with animals (personal, volunteer, or professional) preferred.

 

Work Environment:

While performing the duties of this job, the Animal Caretaker will/may work in the following environments:

  • Indoor controlled, temperate environment.
  • If the caretaker is assigned to work in the outdoor aviary, work will occur in a variety of weather conditions including inclement weather (rain, snow, heat, cold, etc.)

 

Physical Demands:

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an Animal Caretaker to

successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

  • Ability to reach, bend, stoop, push and/or pull, and routinely lift/move up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to use small step ladders to perform work.
  • Ability to work with hands in water to perform cleaning and work in aquaria.
  • Close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus, with or without corrective lenses.

Expected Hours of Work:

The work expectations for Animal Caretaker student employees includes:

  • The Animal Caretaker must be able to work between 3- 7 days a week depending on agree upon schedule and department working in. Caretakers in the Biology department will work between 3-4 days a week and Psychology up to 7 days a week.
  • For each day the Caretaker is assigned to work, the Caretaker will work between 1-4 hours depending on workload.
  • Daily assigned work must occur between 7AM and 9PM
  • Student employees may not work over 20 hours per week during the school year among all Bethel employment.
