JOB SUMMARY

The Commodity Manager – PCBA is responsible for developing and executing sourcing strategies for printed circuit board assembly (PCBA) and related electronic component commodities to ensure a reliable, cost-effective, and high-performing supply base. This role leads supplier selection, contract negotiations, and supplier performance management for EMS (Electronics Manufacturing Services) providers and electronic component suppliers, while partnering with Engineering, Operations, Quality, Planning, and Buyers to support new product introduction and production for PCBA-based assemblies.

JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Develop and execute commodity strategies for PCBA and electronic components (EMS providers, bare boards, passives, semiconductors, connectors, and related materials) aligned with business objectives.
  • Lead strategic sourcing initiatives including identification, qualification, and selection of EMS/contract manufacturers and electronic component suppliers.
  • Negotiate pricing, contracts, and long-term supplier agreements with EMS partners and component distributors/OEMs.
  • Manage supplier performance through demand forecasting, scorecards, and business reviews specific to PCBA suppliers.
  • Drive cost reduction, risk mitigation, and supply continuity initiatives for PCBA sustaining production and transfer projects, including management of component obsolescence and end-of-life (EOL) risk.
  • Partner with Engineering to support supplier selection, DFM/DFT input, and speed of delivery for new product introductions involving PCBA and electronic assemblies.
  • Collaborate with Buyers and Planning to resolve material shortages, allocation issues, and supplier escalations for electronic components.
  • Lead RFIs, RFQs, and RFPs for PCBA and electronic component commodities.
  • Monitor electronic component markets (including semiconductor lead times, allocation, and pricing trends) and identify supply chain risks and opportunities.
  • Support supplier audits and corrective action activities with Quality, including IPC-standard compliance for PCBA suppliers.
  • Maintain sourcing documentation and ERP data integrity for PCBA-related parts and suppliers.
  • Lead continuous improvement initiatives and mentor procurement team members.
  • Ensure compliance with company policies, quality systems, and regulatory requirements.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education

  • Bachelor's degree in Supply Chain Management, Business Administration, Engineering (Electrical/Electronics preferred), or related field required.
  • CPSM, CSCP, CPIM, or MBA preferred.

Experience

  • 7+ years of strategic sourcing, procurement, and commodity management experience.
  • 3+ years of experience sourcing PCBA, electronic components, or EMS services specifically.
  • Experience negotiating EMS/contract manufacturing agreements and managing supplier performance.
  • Medical device or contract manufacturing experience preferred.

 

Skills

  • Strategic sourcing and supplier relationship management, with working knowledge of PCBA manufacturing processes (SMT, THT, testing) and EMS business models.
  • Familiarity with electronic component categories (semiconductors, passives, connectors, bare boards) and awareness of IPC standards (e.g., IPC-A-610, J-STD-001).
  • Strong negotiation, financial, and analytical skills, including experience navigating semiconductor allocation and lead-time volatility.
  • Knowledge of ERP/MRP systems and Microsoft Office.
  • Excellent communication, project management, and cross-functional collaboration skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.

The salary range for this position is outlined below under "Job Details" and is dependent upon the individual's skills, experience, qualifications, and applicable employment laws.
