Job Summary

The Concrete Lab Technician supports daily operations by conducting specific laboratory quality control tests of concrete and construction materials. The services provided within the Division are performed to the standards of industry including ASTM, AASHTO, and ACI as well as state laws governing professional services. All services will be performed in accordance with AET's QA/QC procedures. The Level II Technician will have an instrumental position in developing the expertise and efficiency of the department, including training and service orientation.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Work independently performing testing services in the following areas: 
  • Perform laboratory testing 
  • Record data, and/or observations of construction materials, especially concrete. 
  • Conduct test measurements, data reduction and compilation of data. 
  • Conducts laboratory evaluations of construction materials, including preparation and reweighing of materials, mixing and test specimen preparation, fresh properties testing, specimen demolding, clean-up. Disposition and curing of test specimens. 
  • Take ownership of assigned testing methods and develop proficiency across an expanding range of laboratory testing procedures. 
  • Identify problems or potential issues and refer to higher level staff for assistance. 
  • Complete work independently or as a team, with review of work by Project Managers and/or Engineers. 
  • Schedule tests and milestones for long-term tests. 
  • Communicate with and report test results to project manager. 
  • Provide basic on-the-job training to lower level Technicians. 
  • Calibrate and maintain testing equipment in a clean working order. 
  • Participate in continuing education endeavors such as obtaining certifications, seminars, classes, conferences, etc. in order to maintain position on leading edge of current technology. 


Other Areas of Accountability 

  • Conduct field, laboratory and office activities in a manner consistent with federal, state, and local regulations, along with AET’s QA and Health and Safety Policies, to promote the safety and protection of employees, clients and the public. 
  • Increase proficiency in construction materials testing. 
  • Maintain the quality of service and work product. 
  • Properly use and maintain company instruments and equipment. 
  • Maintain valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record.  Some positions may require the use of a personal vehicle for company business.   
  • Coordinate with other staff with the ultimate goal of increasing efficiency, productivity, and communication. 
  • Perform other tasks as necessary to meet departmental or company goals. 


Required Qualifications and Education Requirements 

  • High school diploma or equivalent; two-year technical degree in a related field preferred. 
  • Minimum of 3+ years of related experience. 
  • Certifications required in certain specialty areas.  ACI Strength Testing Technician Certificate or other certification preferred. 
  • Knowledge of the services provided by AET; knowledge of the relationships of projects and departments.


Preferred Skills 

  • Demonstrated knowledge of company procedures, regulations and standards that govern practices within the specialty area 
  • Knowledge of and skill in using equipment related to the project. 
  • Skill in accurately analyzing and effectively communicating test data/results to appropriate parties. 
  • Communication skills sufficient to work effectively with clients and coworkers. 
  • Ability to interact successfully with a wide variety of people, work effectively within project teams, resolve issues and problems in a constructive manner, and work independently in the field.   
  • Capable of the physical labor required, with personal protective equipment.
  • Ability to:  
    • Frequently lift 30-60 pounds from the floor to 2 feet.  
    • Frequently carry 30-60 pounds for 10-30 feet. 
    • Occasionally move 60-100 pounds using a team lift, cart, or other appropriate safety precautions. 


Pay Transparency 

Base compensation is expected to be in the range of $27.00 – $30.00 per hour based on skill set and experience. The selected candidate must be authorized to work for any employer in the U.S. without requiring visa sponsorship now or in the future. 

 

Work Environment

This position primarily operates within a laboratory environment, performing sample preparation, materials handling, testing, and evaluation. The work involves exposure to dust, noise, laboratory chemicals, and testing equipment, requiring adherence to safety protocols and PPE requirements. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, and photocopiers.    


Physical Demands

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to stand; walk; use hands or finger, handle or feel; and reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to sit; climb or balance, and stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50-100 pounds. The employee will occasionally push or pull equipment weighing up to 200 pounds. The employee is required to frequently work outside.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
