OVERVIEW

Job Title: Personal Trainer

Pay rate: $16.50 per hour

Hours: TBD

Location: St Paul

 

 

This position is responsible for providing individual personal training sessions for students, faculty, and staff who would like to improve their physical fitness. This job is a collaboration with Wellness Coaching, and participants will be referred through the Wellness Coaching program at the Center for Well-Being. Participants will meet with the Personal Trainer weekly for 6 weeks.  

 

Essential Functions: 

  • Conduct initial fitness assessment, and develop a personalized fitness plan 
  • Collaborate with clients on fitness goals and monitor progress 
  • Explain exercises in detail and provide alternatives as needed 
  • Orientate clients to the fitness room, equipment, and educate them how to properly and safely use gym equipment 
  • Ensure client safety during fitness sessions and instruct them on proper form and alignment 
  • Develop a rapport with client/student and provide guidance, encouragement, and support  
  • Re-evaluate and adjust fitness plan as needed during follow-up sessions 
  • Arrive at least 10 minutes early prior to scheduled appointment  
  • Administrative duties may include scheduling follow-up sessions, sending reminder emails to clients, documenting progress, and corresponding with Wellness Coach 

 

This position offers an opportunity for an Exercise Science student to gain experience in personal training and provide support to students who would like to improve their health, physical fitness, and mental well-being. This position will work closely with the Wellness Coach and Exercise Science Professors. 

 

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Qualifications: 

  • Exercise Science major and completion of EXSC 213 Anatomy and EXSC 214 Physiology 
  • Enthusiasm and interest in fitness, health promotion, healthy lifestyle practices, and supporting others in achieving their health and fitness goals 
  • Basic knowledge of physical exercise, anatomy, and physiology, and the ability to develop appropriate fitness plans based on the client/student’s needs 
  • Knowledge of gym equipment, machines, and fitness techniques and safety practices 
  • Ability to work with students from diverse backgrounds and with various levels of physical fitness  
  • Positive attitude and excellent interpersonal skills 
  • Ability to work independently and take ownership of projects 
  • Open to feedback for learning, growth, and development 
  • Available to work some weeknights and weekends, as required 

 

Desired Qualifications

  • Current student with continued enrollment for the entire 2025-2026 academic year.  

 

ELIGIBILITY

To be eligible for student employment, St. Thomas students must be degree seeking at the undergraduate, graduate and doctoral levels.
