OVERVIEW

Job Title: Staff, The Crest

Location: St. Paul

Pay Rate: $350 per semester for first-time staff members, $400 for students with at least one semester of student media at the college level

The Crest is hiring staff members! Several opportunities are available in the following areas:

  • Reporting and newswriting
  • Media design (for illustrations, infographics and other design projects)

These positions report directly to their respective team leadership staff of The Crest and indirectly to student media faculty advisors.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Reporting/newswriting staff work on breaking news, submit story ideas, produce stories as assigned, and work in the studio as assigned
  • Photo and video staff work with news staff to provide photos and videos as part of stories. Photographers and videographers can also create their own, stand-alone visual media stories
  • Media design staff work with reporting staff to create visuals such as infographics for text-based stories and for social media; designers also with advertising/public relations staff to create visuals as needed for promotional purposes
  • Advertising and public relations staff develop and implement promotions for The Crest on campus, and they also create advertising and write public relations materials
  • KUST staff work with the KUST station manager and other staff at The Crest to promote and manage the station as well as DJ and contribute to KUST podcasts and other content
  • All staff are eligible to work in the studio
  • All staff also:
    • Adhere to deadlines
    • Attend all staff meetings
    • Attend two 100-minute shifts per week
    • Record News in:90 and/or Sports in:60 at least once every semester
    • Conduct duties in accordance with the University Policy on Student Media
  • All staff may be assigned to other duties as needed

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Has enthusiasm for storytelling, and a commitment to a future in media in some capacity
  • Understanding or willingness to learn relevant skills (e.g. AP Style), equipment (e.g. cameras) and software (e.g. Adobe suite) as needed
  • Has relevant coursework or previous experience relevant to the job (but if you are enthusiastic, don't let this stop you from applying)
  • Is dynamic, personable, flexible, organized, and has a team orientation
  • Possesses problem-solving skills
  • Is responsive, reliable, flexible and possesses good judgment

Evaluation and Term of Hire

As pay is contingent on satisfactory performance, students should expect evaluations at mid- and semester's end.

 

This position is typically hired for the full academic year (fall and spring semesters).

Application review will begin August 24. Selected applicants will be contacted by a student manager or faculty adviser to arrange an in-person interview. Interviews will be arranged before September 6 and held in the Schoenecker Center. Applications will be reviewed until all positions are filled.

To be eligible for student employment, St. Thomas students must be degree seeking at the undergraduate, graduate and doctoral levels.
