What it's like to be an Accounting Specialist at Ferguson Township

The Accounting Specialist is responsible for payroll and accounts payable This dual‑function role is focused on ensuring employees and vendors are paid accurately, on time, and in compliance with laws and internal policies. This position combines two core municipal finance functions: payroll administration and accounts payable operations and answers directly to the Director of Finance.

Some specific job duties include:

  • Processing weekly and monthly payroll, to include: validating timesheets, the processing of timesheets, initiating ACH transfers, submitting post-payroll reports, entering necessary journal entries, and submitting unemployment compensation reports.
  • Maintain garnishments, taxes, and direct deposit information
  • Reconcile changes to employee pay changes, benefits, and deductions
  • Prepare year-end payroll documents
  • Processing weekly accounts payable, to include: reconciling invoices, coding, collecting approvals, payment preparation, and monitoring for budget compliance
  • Maintain vendor records and collect W9s
  • Reconcile purchasing card activity
  • As needed, assist with account transfers, journal entries, bank reconciliations, preparation of 1099s, and budget preparation
  • Serve as a backup for collecting tax payments, greeting visitors, and answering Township phone calls

What we're looking for in an Accounting Specialist
To excel in this role, candidates should possess:

  • A minimum of two (2) years of experience with payroll processing
  • Associate's Degree in accounting, finance , or a related field, preferred
  • Experience in processing accounts payable
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and Word and experience working with HR information systems and accounting systems
