The primary role of this position is to serve as an analytical chemist in the Water and Environmental Analysis Laboratory, provide expertise to analyze water samples using accepted methods, and to maintain partnerships with internal and external stakeholders. Techniques relevant to this position include flow injection chromatography, discrete colorimetry analysis, UV-VIS, and digestion processes used with methods EPA 365.4, EPA 351.2, or Standard Methods 4500-N D.
The person in this position will be expected to review and understand the regulations under which the laboratory maintains certifications. The person will be required to follow established methodologies and quality assurance protocols. The person must demonstrate professionalism and team skills within the workplace through their encounters with their directors, supervisors, coworkers, student analysts, and clients. Maintaining a willingness for continuous education by participation in appropriate professional development is expected. This academic staff position is funded by program revenue and functions under the supervision of the Chemist Supervisor.

- Provides result interpretation and participates in educational and outreach activities

- Utilizes, maintains, and troubleshoots laboratory instrumentation and information management systems to meet unit objectives in alignment with strategic initiatives
- Establishes and maintains partnerships with internal and external stakeholders and communicates research updates to appropriate entities
- Performs non-routine instrument maintenance and repairs
- Prepares technical reports, makes scientific recommendations based on findings, and presents materials to stake holder groups through various mediums
- Performs high complexity analytical testing, employing quality control and quality assurance practices
Department:
The Water and Environmental Analysis Laboratory (WEAL) is a unit of the Center for Watershed Science and Education (CWSE) in the College of Natural Resources. The mission of the WEAL is to provide quality analytical services, undergraduate educational opportunities for UWSP students, outreach education support to CWSE staff and the general public, and support or initiate research of pertinent surface and groundwater issues across the state of Wisconsin.
Compensation:
$44,000-$50,000 annually, based on qualifications and experience
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in chemistry, biochemistry, biology, natural sciences, or related field.
- Coursework in general or analytical chemistry or demonstrated experience in an analytical chemistry lab.
- Experience with the operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of lab instrumentation
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience working in a Wisconsin DNR-certified laboratory that conducts analytical testing of surface water, groundwater and/or drinking water.
- Experience with good laboratory practices for operation, safety, and quality control.
- Experience with the operation and maintenance of a SEAL AA 500 used to analyze Total Phosphorus and Total Kjeldahl Nitrogen.
- Experience with digestion techniques such as EPA 365.4, EPA 351.2, or Standard Methods 4500-Norg D).
- Experience with a laboratory information management system (LIMS).
- Familiarity with Microsoft product suite.
- Coursework in organic chemistry or instrumental analysis.
Education:
Bachelor’s degree in chemistry, biochemistry, biology, natural sciences, or related field.
