The King and Queen County Virginia Sheriff's Office has multiple openings in emergency communications dispatch and is hiring for both full-time and part-time positions to serve the County.聽 The 911 Emergency Dispatcher is a non-sworn uniformed communications officer. The Dispatcher is the first point of contact for the public during an emergency and responds to both emergency and non-emergency calls for assistance and information. The position is responsible for answering emergency calls and dispatching law enforcement, fire, and medical personnel.聽 The position provides communication support services for law enforcement, fire, emergency services and other related services. This is an in-person position, and there is no remote option available.
Minimum Requirements for the Positions:
- Must 18 years of age
- High School Diploma or equivalent required.
- Must have a valid driver鈥檚 license
- Demonstrated ability to complete Basic Dispatch training within one year.
- Demonstrated ability to complete various other training courses within the first three months.
- Prior DCJS-certified communications/dispatcher experience (Preferred but not required). We will provide training.
The ideal candidates will have a high stress tolerance and the ability to maintain composure and focus during critical life-or-death situations; active listening skills to discern changes in tone while collecting specific details from panicked callers and to pick up background noises. The ability to multi-task is vital to success in this position such as the ability to type rapidly while speaking, monitoring screens, and being attentive to multiple communications simultaneously. The 911 Dispatcher position requires good written and oral communication skills and an average typing speed of 60+ words per minute.
The position of 911 Dispatcher is primarily a clerical job that requires long periods of sitting, typing, and looking at a computer screen. The following activities are expected:
路 Sitting for long periods of time (6-12 hours).
路 Typing and viewing computer screens for long periods of time (6-8 hours).
路 Ability to lift 5 to 10 pounds often
路 Ability to lift 10 to 50 pounds rarely
Duties and Responsibilities:
路 Operate a multi-line telephone console system, and TDD system for the deaf and hearing
聽 聽impaired.
路 Determine and assign the level of priority of the call and enter the data into a computer-aided
聽 dispatch system for radio dispatch purposes.
路 Perform emergency medical dispatch and crisis intervention services.
路 Ask vital questions and provide pre-arrival instructions for emergency medical calls.
路 Monitor and operate a radio console and computer equipment.
路 Receive and respond to a variety of emergency and non-emergency services and complaints.
路 Ask questions to interpret, analyze and anticipate the caller鈥檚 situations to resolve problems,
聽 provide information, dispatch emergency services, or refer a caller to other agencies.
路 Dispatch and coordinate the response of public safety agencies.
路 Identify appropriate number and type of equipment or apparatus to dispatch.
路 Enters and modifies information into local, state, and national computer databases.
路 Monitor and respond to a variety of technical systems and alarms.
The Part-time Emergency Communications Officer Position are positions with no benefits. Our part-time employees are given first opportunity and consideration for full-time positions when they become available.
