Description

The Product Assembly Technician is responsible for the precision assembly, inspection, and functional verification of electrical and electro-mechanical components used in power transformer applications. This role specifically supports the assembly of load tap changer (LTC) components, complete load tap changers, and mechanical drive mechanisms, ensuring all products meet engineering drawings, quality standards, and customer specifications.

The ideal candidate demonstrates strong mechanical aptitude, experience with electrical assembly, attention to detail, and a commitment to safety and quality in a manufacturing or industrial environment.

Requirements

  

Assembly & Manufacturing

Assemble electrical and mechanical components related to power transformer load tap changers, including but not limited to: 

Diverter switch assemblies, Selector switch components, Mechanical drive mechanisms, Actuators, gearing, shafts, linkages, and housings


Perform sub-assembly and final assembly operations according to: 

Engineering drawings, Bills of material (BOMs), Work instructions, and specifications. Use hand tools, torque tools, fixtures, and measurement instruments to complete assemblies accurately. Interpret mechanical and electrical prints, schematics, and assembly drawings


Quality & Inspection

Conduct in-process and final inspections to verify dimensional accuracy, alignment, and mechanical operation. Verify electrical continuity, insulation, and proper functionality per work instructions. Identify, document, and report non-conformances or assembly issues. Support corrective actions and continuous improvement initiatives


Testing & Verification

Support functional testing of assembled components and mechanisms. Assist with mechanical cycling, operational checks, and validation of movement and timing. Document assembly completion and testing results as required


Safety & Compliance

Perform work in accordance with company safety policies, lock-out/tag-out procedures, and quality standards. Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area. Properly handle tools, components, and materials to prevent damage or injury


Collaboration & Communication

Work closely with engineering, quality, and production teams to resolve technical or assembly issues. Provide feedback on assembly procedures, tooling needs, and product design improvements. Support training and mentoring efforts for less-experienced technicians as needed


Required Qualifications

High school diploma or GED required; technical or vocational training preferred

3+ years of experience in mechanical or electro-mechanical assembly in an industrial or manufacturing environment

Experience assembling electrical or mechanical components, power equipment, or transformer experience strongly preferred

Ability to read and interpret technical drawings and specifications

Proficient with hand tools, torque tools, and basic measuring equipment

Strong attention to detail and workmanship quality

Ability to lift up to 50 lbs and perform repetitive tasks in a shop environment

Preferred Qualifications

Experience with load tap changers, breaker mechanisms, or heavy electrical apparatus

Familiarity with power transformer components or substation equipment

Understanding of basic electrical principles (continuity, grounding, insulation)

Experience working in ISO- or quality-controlled manufacturing environments

Ability to troubleshoot mechanical assembly issues independently

Ability to follow standardized processes while identifying improvement opportunities
