Position Description: Materials Lead

The Materials Lead is a hands-on, working lead responsible for coordinating and executing daily material flow activities across the manufacturing and warehouse environment. This role ensures that materials are available, replenished, and controlled to support production needs throughout the facility.


The Materials Lead operates across functional and physical boundaries, prioritizing work, resolving material issues in real time, and reinforcing foundational materials processes. This role works closely with the Materials Supervisor and serves as a key on-the-floor resource for both materials and production teams.

Requirements

  

Primary Duties: 

Plant-Wide Material Flow Execution 

  • Coordinate and support daily material flow activities supporting production, kitting, picking, replenishment, and manufacturing operations 
  • Help ensure production teams have the correct material, in the correct location, at the correct time to support build schedules and operational priorities 
  • Monitor material availability, shortages, and replenishment needs throughout the shift and proactively address constraints before they impact production 
  • Coordinate picking, kitting, staging, line-side replenishment, supermarket support, and material movement activities across the facility 
  • Respond to urgent production material requests and reprioritize resources based on operational needs and changing production demands 
  • Support efficient material flow between warehouse, stockroom, supermarket, and production areas 
  • Serve as the first point of escalation for production-related material flow issues, shortages, or execution gaps during the shift 
  • Work closely with Production, Planning, Procurement, Logistics, and Inventory teams to help maintain operational continuity and minimize downtime related to material availability 

ERP Transactions & Material Troubleshooting 

  • Utilize Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central (BC) to support material movement, inventory, picking, transfer, replenishment, and production support transactions 
  • Troubleshoot and resolve operational issues related to material shortages, inventory discrepancies, picking errors, transfer order issues, and material location problems 
  • Investigate systematic material flow or inventory issues impacting production support and operational execution 
  • Help ensure inventory transactions, material moves, replenishment activity, and production support transactions are completed accurately and in a timely manner 
  • Partner closely with Inventory Control, Planning, Procurement, and Logistics teams to resolve transaction or inventory issues impacting production readiness 
  • Reinforce transaction discipline and standard process execution across material handling and production support activities 
  • Escalate recurring inventory, ERP, or process issues impacting operational performance or material availability 
  • Support root cause analysis and corrective actions related to shortages, inventory discrepancies, transaction failures, or material flow disruptions 

Working Lead Responsibilities 

  • Provide day-to-day operational coordination and leadership for material handlers supporting production and warehouse operations 
  • Help assign daily responsibilities and adjust priorities throughout the shift based on production schedules, shortages, and operational demands 
  • Coordinate labor and workflow across picking, kitting, replenishment, supermarket support, and material movement activities 
  • Monitor production support activities and proactively identify HOT jobs, critical shortages, or urgent material needs requiring escalation or reprioritization 
  • Work closely with Production, Planning, and Procurement teams to track material availability and support critical production timelines 
  • Support onboarding, training, and development of material handling personnel 
  • Reinforce accountability, urgency, operational discipline, safety, and standard work across production support material operations 
  • Observe material flow throughout the facility and proactively identify bottlenecks, inefficiencies, layout concerns, or process gaps 
  • Help maintain balanced workloads and operational coverage across production support areas 
  • Serve as the first point of escalation for production material support issues during the shift 
  • Partner with supervisors and leadership to identify operational risks, staffing gaps, and process improvement opportunities 

Inventory Control & Cycle Counting Support 

  • Execute and support cycle counting activities across the facility 
  • Investigate inventory discrepancies and support root cause identification 
  • Maintain accurate inventory records using current systems (Google Sheets initially, ERP in the future) 

Foundational Process Execution 

  • Execute and reinforce standardized material handling, kitting, replenishment, supermarket, and production support processes 
  • Support inventory accuracy through disciplined material movement and transaction execution 
  • Reinforce standard work, visual controls, and operational best practices across production support activities 
  • Help improve material presentation, line-side organization, and production support flow 
  • Support continuous improvement initiatives related to picking accuracy, replenishment timing, kitting efficiency, and material availability 
  • Assist with implementation and reinforcement of Kanban, water spider, and pull-based replenishment systems 

Communication & Coordination 

  • Communicate material status, risks, and priorities with production, planning, and purchasing teams 
  • Provide clear updates and context to the Materials Supervisor 
  • Support cross-functional problem-solving related to material flow 

Safety, Organization & Discipline 

  • Ensure safe material handling practices are followed 
  • Maintain organized, clearly labeled material locations throughout the facility 
  • Support 5S and visual management standards 

Experience & Skills: 

  • 2–4 years of experience in materials, inventory, or warehouse operations in a manufacturing environment 
  • Experience supporting material flow across multiple production or warehouse areas 
  • Hands-on experience with cycle counting and inventory accuracy 
  • Comfortable using Microsoft Excel for tracking and basic analysis 
  • Ability to operate material handling equipment as required 
  • Strong understanding of production support material flow, replenishment, and inventory movement processes 
  • Experience working within ERP systems to support material transactions and inventory movement 
  • Ability to prioritize multiple operational demands in a fast-paced manufacturing environment 

Preferred Experience & Skills: 

  • Experience in high-mix or engineered-to-order manufacturing 
  • Exposure to Kanban, water spider, or similar pull-based material systems 
  • Prior experience serving as a working lead, coordinator, or go-to resource on a team 
  • Experience supporting ERP implementations or operational system transitions 
  • Experience supporting production scheduling, kitting, or line-side replenishment operations 
  • Experience identifying and resolving operational material flow bottlenecks 

Education:  

  • High school diploma or equivalent; technical certification in electrical/wiring preferred.
