There is always something new to learn as the field of ophthalmology continues to grow and advance. Ophthalmic Assistants provide vision care under the supervision of a licensed ophthalmologist and assist with taking patient histories, performing diagnostic tests and procedures, patient scheduling, and exam room preparation.
A caregiver in this position works 7:00am to 4:30pm or 7:30am to 5:00pm.
A caregiver who excels in this role will:
- Receive and prepare patients for examination or treatment.
- Perform initial patient examinations, ophthalmic testing procedures and routine screening tests.
- Assist physicians with examinations and procedures.
- Document patient information in their medical record.
- Perform clerical, stocking, maintenance and related duties.
Minimum qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:
- High school diploma or GED
- Minimum of one year experience in an ophthalmic setting providing direct patient care
- Additional formal education or training in ophthalmology may substitute for some or all of the stated experience
Physical Requirements:
- Manual dexterity to operate office equipment and PC.
- Ability to lift and transport up to 25 pounds.
- May require extended periods of standing, walking or sitting.
- Visual acuity, including the ability to distinguish colors.
Personal Protective Equipment:
- Follows standard precautions using personal protective equipment as required.
