Job Summary

The Marketing Manager executes DSI's day-to-day communications strategy and manages the organization's volunteer recruitment function. This role is responsible for maintaining a consistent, compelling, and mission-aligned presence across DSI's digital and print channels, producing content that tells DSI's story effectively to members, donors, partners, and the broader community. The Marketing Manager also serves as the primary point of contact for volunteer recruitment organization-wide — building and managing the pipeline of volunteers that both centers depend on — while individual departments retain responsibility for day-to-day volunteer scheduling and deployment within their areas.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The tasks listed in this job description represent the majority of the time spent working in this role.

Communications & Content

  • Execute DSI's social media strategy across all active platforms — creating, scheduling, and publishing content that is on-brand, timely, and mission-aligned
  • Produce and distribute DSI's email newsletter, ensuring content is accurate, well-written, and reflective of programs and activities at both centers
  • Maintain and update DSI's website, ensuring information is current, accurate, and accessible
  • Write and produce a range of communications materials — flyers, program announcements, member communications, event promotions, partner-facing content, and digital graphics — consistent with DSI's brand standards
  • Develop and maintain a content calendar that coordinates communications across channels and aligns with organizational priorities, program schedules, and fundraising activities
  • Gather member impact stories, program highlights, and organizational milestones from both centers for use across communications channels — regularly visiting both the Summerville and St. George centers to capture content firsthand
  • Support the production of donor communications, annual reports, and fundraising materials as directed by the Director of Communications & Development
  • Coordinate promotional materials and outreach for DSI events in partnership with the outsourced event planner as applicable

Brand & Digital Presence

  • Maintain DSI's brand consistency across all communications materials — digital and print — in alignment with the standards established by the Director of Communications & Development
  • Monitor DSI's social media engagement and digital analytics, providing regular performance summaries to the Director of Communications & Development
  • Respond to routine public-facing social media comments and messages in a timely and professional manner, escalating sensitive matters to the Director of Communications & Development
  • Support the maintenance of DSI's digital assets library — photos, graphics, templates, and brand files — ensuring materials are current, organized, and accessible

Volunteer Recruitment & Coordination

  • Serve as DSI's primary point of contact for volunteer recruitment organization-wide — developing and executing proactive outreach strategies to build the volunteer pipeline for both centers
  • Post volunteer opportunities through appropriate channels — community platforms, faith communities, schools, corporate partners, and other sources — and respond promptly to inquiries
  • Conduct informational conversations with prospective volunteers, manage the application and onboarding process, and ensure volunteers are properly oriented before placement
  • Maintain accurate volunteer records including contact information, skills, availability, background check status, and hours contributed
  • Coordinate volunteer placement logistics with individual departments, matching volunteer skills and availability to departmental needs — departments retain responsibility for day-to-day volunteer scheduling and deployment within their areas
  • Develop and maintain volunteer onboarding materials, orientation resources, and recognition content in coordination with the Director of Communications & Development
  • Monitor volunteer program metrics — active volunteer count, hours contributed, recruitment pipeline, and retention — and report to the Director of Communications & Development on a regular schedule
  • Support DSI's volunteer appreciation efforts, including recognition events, thank-you communications, and milestones acknowledgement

Reporting & Collaboration

  • Provide regular updates to the Director of Communications & Development on communications performance, content calendar status, and volunteer program metrics
  • Collaborate with all directors and Prevention Managers to gather program information, member stories, and event details for communications use
  • Assist with preparation of board reports, grant narratives, and funder communications as directed
  • Participate in all-staff meetings, department meetings, and organizational events as scheduled

Other Job Expectations

  • Represent DSI professionally in all public-facing interactions — online, in print, and in person
  • Maintain regular presence at both the Summerville and St. George centers to gather content, support volunteer coordination, and stay connected to the member experience
  • Assist as needed with DSI special events, including setup, promotion, and volunteer coordination on event days
  • Adhere to all DSI policies, procedures, and ethical standards — including social media policy, member confidentiality, and photo/media release requirements
  • Model the organizational values and professional standards expected of all DSI staff

Required Skills, Abilities & Education

  • Bachelor's degree preferred; background in marketing, communications, public relations, digital media, or a related field required
  • Minimum two years of experience in marketing, communications, or content creation — nonprofit experience preferred
  • Demonstrated proficiency in social media management across multiple platforms
  • Strong writing skills — ability to produce clear, compelling, and brand-consistent content for multiple audiences and channels
  • Experience with email marketing platforms, website content management systems, and basic graphic design tools (Canva, Adobe, or equivalent)
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage a content calendar, multiple concurrent projects, and competing deadlines
  • Experience with volunteer recruitment, coordination, or nonprofit volunteer management preferred
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and Google Workspace
  • Ability to work collaboratively across departments and build positive relationships with staff, volunteers, members, and community partners
  • Valid South Carolina driver's license with no more than six points in violations — regular travel between both centers is expected
