The Kent Place School Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) Department is seeking a forward-thinking educator to develop and teach innovative courses within our Upper School. Students learn to code in Python, Java, and other programming languages; to design and program soft and hard circuits; and to fully execute engineering and human-centered design processes. A desirable candidate will have experience introducing students to text-based programming, teaching AP Computer Science, and cultivating an inclusive learning environment accessible to all students and that advances equity in STEM.

In addition to teaching a full course load, the CSE faculty member will support STEM initiatives by leading activities that broaden participation in STEM. Expectations for this position will include collaborating with colleagues, advising students in our upper school, and participating in community events. The CSE faculty member will cultivate and maintain relationships with faculty across academic departments to provide support and training on cross-disciplinary learning opportunities for students that employ AI, machine learning, and our Innovation Lab.

Skills and Qualifications

Teaching and Curriculum Development

  • Experience teaching foundational concepts in computer science, engineering, and data analysis.
  • Proficiency in programming languages relevant to high school and advanced topics, such as Python,, Java and other text-based programming.
  • Experience with introducing students to the core concepts of machine learning and artificial intelligence, including algorithms, data structures, and statistical thinking.
  • Ability to integrate project-based learning (PBL) focused on real-world applications of AI, data science, and engineering design processes.
  • Experience teaching students to design and program soft and hard circuits and fully execute human-centered design processes.
  • Proven ability to cultivate an inclusive learning environment that is accessible to all students and advances equity in STEM.

Machine Learning and AI-Specific Expertise

  • Familiarity with computational thinking and data analysis principles.
  • Knowledge of common ML models (e.g., supervised and unsupervised learning) and the ability to simplify these concepts for a high school audience.
  • Experience with educational programming tools and libraries used in data science, such as Python libraries (e.g., NumPy, Pandas, scikit-learn).
  • A strong understanding of the ethical considerations, bias, and societal impact of AI and the ability to integrate these discussions into the curriculum.

Collaboration and School Community

  • Ability to collaborate with colleagues across academic departments to provide support and training on the use of resources in the Innovation Lab.
  • Experience leading activities that broaden student participation in STEM.
  • Ability to facilitate an after-school STEM program for students.
  • Enthusiasm for advising students in the upper school and participating in community events.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, STEM Education, Mathematics, Physical Science, or a related field is required.
  • Master's degree in Computer Science, a related technical field, or Education/Teaching is preferred.
  • A minimum of 3 years of prior teaching experience is preferred.
  • Experience or a strong disposition towards developing and implementing a machine learning/AI curriculum or coursework is highly desirable.
