Job Highlights

Youth Apprentices in the Optical Assistant pathway work closely with patients to provide direct patient care related to eye exams and prescription fulfillment. Availability to work days during a standard work week is crucial to fulfilling the 450-hour requirement. A licensed or certified professional will serve as your mentor and will help guide your training while providing ongoing support in the role.

路 Effectively work as part of a team, communicate effectively with close attention to details

路 Maintain academic and attendance requirements for participation in the Youth Apprenticeship Program

路 Participate in progress reviews scheduled with mentors, school staff, parent(s) or guardian(s), and employer

路 Assist with selection of frames, and measure and fit them for their optical prescription

路 Instruct clients on how to care for eyewear

路 Assist with eye exam set-up, cleaning, and restocking

路 Assist to perform eye exam

路 Perform other duties as assigned

Education and Experience Requirements

路 High school junior or senior

路 16 years of age

路 Must be authorized and approved by the Wisconsin Youth Apprentice Program in accordance with your local school criteria

路 Ability to work 10-15 hours per week at a clinic site M-F during the day

路 Reliable transportation to get to and from work

路 Satisfactory progress towards graduation

路 Commit to completing 450 hours at the jobsite

路 Demonstrated maturity and responsibility

路 Skill with attending to details, excellent attendance and a strong work ethic

路 Foster a culture of caring through interpersonal relationships and communication

Job Summary:

Assists with eye exams including exam set up, cleaning and restocking. Helps patients select frames and measure and fit them for their optical prescription.

Job Responsibilities and Requirements:

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Setups of optometry area.聽
  • Assists in performing eye exams.聽
  • Assists with measuring patient eye lengths, centers, and distances.聽
  • Cleans and restocks after procedures. Maintains inventory.聽
  • Obtains lens prescriptions.聽
  • Assists with ordering frames and lenses.聽
  • Instruct how to care for eyewear.聽
  • Assists patients with selecting frames.聽
  • Fits glasses to patients.聽
  • Respects patient confidentiality and maintains Health Insurance Portability Accountability Act (HIPAA) compliance.聽
  • Works in a constant state of alertness and safe manner.聽
  • Performs other duties as assigned.聽

EDUCATION

  • Must be at least 16 years of age prior to start date and current high school student
  • Acceptance into Youth Apprenticeship program through local high school

EXPERIENCE

  • No experience required

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Constant standing and walking.
  • Frequent use of hearing and speech to share information through oral communication.
  • Frequent use of hearing to distinguish body sounds and/or hear alarms, malfunctioning machinery, etc.
  • Frequent lifting/carrying and pushing/pulling objects weighing 0-25 lbs.
  • Frequent reaching, gripping, and keyboard use/data entry.
  • Frequent use of vision for distances near (20 inches or less) and far (20 feet or more) and to identify and distinguish colors.
  • Occasional bending, stooping, crawling, kneeling, sitting, squatting and repetitive foot/leg and hand/arm movements.
  • Occasional use of vision to judge distances and spatial relationships.
  • Occasional lifting/carrying and pushing/pulling objects weighing 25-50 lbs.
  • Occasional lifting/moving patients.
  • Occasional use of smell to detect/recognize odors.
  • Occasional driving.
