Job Description:

The Director of Purchasing oversees the Purchasing Team in identifying, negotiating, and procuring all Not‑For‑Resale (NFR) items for Weis Markets. This role develops procurement strategies for both planned and unbudgeted capital items and ensures the timely delivery of goods and services that support the store network. The Director exercises independent judgment regularly and performs all responsibilities in alignment with company policies and all applicable state and federal laws.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The Director is responsible for the functions below, in addition to other duties as assigned:

  • Lead procurement programs for all NFR furnishings, fixtures, supplies and equipment.
  • Develop and manage vendor contracts for services supporting store operations.
  • Collaborate with Store Development, Store Operations and Merchandising teams to continuously update and enhance current FF&E (furnishings, fixtures and equipment).
  • Evaluate FF&E providers, manufacturing facilities, industry competitors and attend trade conferences to identify the best solutions for the organization.
  • Coordinate with Information Technology, Finance and Accounting Departments to oversee invoicing processes and ensure timely vendor payments.
  • Provide budget request and purchase order oversight on capital and expense items to ensure alignment with the company budget and policies.
  • Coordinate with the Store Development, Store Operations, and Merchandising Departments to provide pricing data for annual Capital Budget Planning efforts.
  • Oversee fixture warehouse operations.
  • Provide weekly, period, and quarterly financial reports to leadership teams on spending for assigned categories.  
  • Provide leadership, coaching, and development to the Associates of the Purchasing Department.

Supervisory Responsibilities

This position manages a team of 4 direct reports and third-party vendors.

Qualification Requirements

To perform this job successfully, the associate must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skills, and/or abilities required:

Education and/or Experience

Bachelor's degree (BA/BS) in Business preferred, plus previous experience in retail purchasing and procurement. Have a thorough understanding of retail operations, preferably in the supermarket industry, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Ability to effectively partner with functional peers and internal partners.
  • Ability to remain flexible to changing business needs and react to those needs in a professional positive manner.

  • Ability to travel as business dictates.
