About the role

Internship Project will include: Compound Imaging Development and Optimization for ATUSA Image Quality  Enhancement

Overview

Compound imaging: reconstructing images from multiple insonification angles.

  • This project focuses on developing and optimizing compound imaging techniques for the  ATUSA 3D breast ultrasound system to address key image quality limitations observed  in current reconstruction.

Objectives

  • Develop and evaluate multi-angle compound imaging approaches for ATUSA - Reduce seam artifacts and improve continuity across stitched regions - Mitigate shadowing effects using angled insonification strategies
  • Establish a framework for robust signal recovery in low-visibility regions - Prepare compound imaging methods for integration into the reconstruction pipeline

Key Responsibilities

  • Baseline Analysis of Current Imaging Limitations
    • Analyze existing ATUSA datasets to characterize seam lines, shadowing, and signal  dropouts
  • Compound Imaging Strategy Development
    • Implement methods combining multiple angular views
  • Explore averaging, weighted blending, and directional compounding 3. Shadow Reduction via Angled Insonification
    • Reconstruct shadowed regions using alternative angular data
  • Seam Artifact Reduction
    • Improve continuity across frame boundaries using compounding
  • Image Quality Improvement
    • Use/modify current apps/algorithms to improve the image quality of the final compound  images
  • Evaluation & Metrics
    • Measure signal recovery, consistency, and image quality improvements 7. Integration Considerations
    • Assess feasibility for real-time implementation and define requirements 8. Documentation & Reporting
    • Provide visual results, reports, and recommendations

Ideal Candidate Background

  • MS or PhD in Biomedical/Electrical Engineering
  • Python and image processing experience
  • Strong interest in medical imaging
