Description of Work

The primary purpose of Location & Surveys is to serve as support services in providing engineering analysis, mapping and other data for the design of transportation facilities and the acquisition of property for the construction of transportation facilities.

The Location & Surveys Unit in Sylva is looking for an Engineering Specialist to provide the Unit’s highest level of technical support.

In this role you will:

•perform a wide variety of the most complex and advanced assignments including analyzing, evaluating, computing, editing, and processing higher-level engineering and other survey information.
•establish (plan, process, and adjust) or review the creation of project control networks utilizing GPS and/or conventional survey methods.
•utilize an extremely wide range of independent decision-making and use of judgement.
•provide supervision and/or direct the work of others.
•check and review technical aspects of survey data and mapping from both in-house and contracted services to ensure that proper procedures are followed, and appropriate accuracies are obtained according to NCDOT, Location & Surveys, and generally accepted surveying standards.
•supervise and review litigation surveys and serve as expert witnesses in litigation cases.
•perform your work under very limited technical and fairly limited administrative supervision.
•receive other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Management prefers applicants with the following:

  • Experience utilizing route locations and other survey policies and procedures.
  • Experience managing or leading survey crews in daily activities.
  • Experience utilizing CADD, Microstation, and Geopak; including editing the work of others.
  • Experience utilizing GPS operations, including Virtual Reference Station (VRS) and rapid-static.
  • Experience planning and reviewing survey work performed by others.

Minimum Education and Experience

Associate’s degree in an applicable area of Engineering Technology or Survey Technology from an appropriately accredited institution and seven years of progressive technician experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
