Position Title: Finance Manager

Department: Finance

FLSA Status: Full Time Hourly/Exempt

Schedule: 40 Hours per Week/Monday-Friday 8:00am-4:30pm (Includes 30-minute unpaid meal break).

WHO WE ARE:

Food Bank of Central New York is a not-for-profit organization leading the effort to eliminate hunger in our region, by partnership with others in our community, through education, advocacy, and distribution of nutritious food. We partner with 360 community partners in the counties of Cayuga, Chenango, Cortland, Herkimer, Jefferson, Lewis, Madison, Oneida, Onondaga, Oswego, and St. Lawrence.

The core of our work is achieved by partnering with local agencies that distribute food to individuals and families in need. The key partners that make up our emergency food network are food pantries, soup kitchens, and emergency shelters. Other not-for-profit agencies such as day care centers, rehabilitation centers, senior centers, and group homes are able to utilize membership as a way to supplement their agency food needs.

Hunger is a very serious problem in the United States today. Despite its great wealth, an estimated one in eight Americans rely on emergency food assistance. Among the thousands of people who depend on charitable food programs in central and northern New York, and the Mohawk Valley:

路 29% are children 18 or younger

路 10% are without health insurance

路 68% have been unemployed for more than two years

路 32% have a working family member

路 91% are below the federal poverty line

路 41% earn less than $12,000 annually

POSITION SUMMARY

The Finance Manager participates in and manages the overall planning and execution of daily operations related to finance within Food Bank of Central New York. This role supports the organization鈥檚 mission of leading the effort to eliminate hunger in our region by ensuring strong financial stewardship and compliance that enables education, advocacy, and the distribution of nutritious food. Responsibilities include preparation and analysis of financial reports, tracking expenditures and grants, budgets, and documentation for internal and external stakeholders. The Finance Manager oversees completion of the monthly financial close process in conjunction with the VP of Finance and CFO, provides direct supervision and support to Finance Coordinators, and ensures that all financial processes and procedures meet organizational standards of confidentiality and operational excellence.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Oversee day-to-day finance operations and facilitate month-end closing process
  • Manage and maintain financial reporting and analysis
  • Ensure confidentiality and implementation of internal controls
  • Lead finance projects, including system upgrades and implementations.
  • Establish and manage relationships with vendors and partner agencies as needed
  • Collaborate with departments to assess financial information support needs
  • Maintain awareness of current financial trends, as well as regulatory and legal requirements related to financial management
  • Partners with leadership to establish and achieve organizational goals.
  • Provides direct supervision, coaching, support, and coverage to assigned employees, including conducting regular check-ins, performance reviews, development planning, and addressing team conflicts in alignment with policies and procedures.
  • Exercises sound judgment and makes informed decisions within the scope of responsibility and subject matter expertise.
  • Model leadership that reflects and promotes Food Bank of Central New York鈥檚 core values and strategic vision.
  • Monitors and manages departmental resource needs, budget considerations, and grant compliance requirements.
  • Represents the Food Bank in relevant forums at the local, state, and national levels.
  • Actively participates in leadership team meetings and contributes to organizational strategy, policy development, and continuous improvement efforts.
  • Support other efforts within the Food Bank as assigned.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Must be able to lift up to 25 pounds occasionally.
  • Able to move about the office and warehouse environments as needed.

EDUCATION & CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

  • Bachelor鈥檚 degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field required.
  • Additional Accounting-related certifications a plus.
  • This position will receive a pre-employment background check. Food Bank of Central New York complies with all applicable state and federal laws pertaining to drug testing and background checks, including Article 23-A.

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

  • Minimum of 3 years of accounting or finance experience.
  • At least 1 year in a leadership or management role overseeing accounting or finance operations.
  • Nonprofit or mission-driven organization experience is a plus.

SKILL REQUIREMENTS

  • Strong technical knowledge across a range of accounting or finance and ERP systems.
  • Strong Excel skills (pivot tables, formulas, data analysis)
  • Excellent leadership and team management skills.
  • Clear and effective communication abilities.
  • Strategic thinking and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to explain financial concepts to non-financial users.
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Integrity and ethical judgment
