Lead Lab Assistant/Phlebotomist

United WestLabs, Inc. (“UWL”) is a health care service company that implements and manages turn-key hospital-based, laboratory outreach Programs.  UWL partners with hospital systems across the country to manage pre-analytical and post-analytical service functions relating to the implementation and operation of outpatient laboratory Programs. UWL implemented its first hospital-based laboratory Program over twenty-six years ago and has successfully operated more hospital-based outpatient lab Programs than any organization in the country.

Job Description:

 In addition to regular phlebotomy duties, Lead Lab Assistant/Phlebotomists will be responsible for working with the Phlebotomy Supervisor to ensure that sites are adequately staffed and adjust schedules to ensure coverage on a day-to-day basis.   Lead Lab Assistant/Phlebotomists are also responsible for ordering supplies and monitoring Lab Assistants in your assigned locations to ensure compliance, maintaining lab compliance logs, communicating and coaching important policy and procedure changes, ensuring timecards are being completed, and acting as the liaison between Lab Assistants and Phlebotomy Supervisors. 

 Responsibilities include:

  1. Perform phlebotomy professionally, competently and with compassion for the patient.
  2. Maintain a safe and clean environment for all staff members and patients, including without limitation, collecting and disposing of specimens and other contaminated material in accordance with established policies and procedures and with adherence to the appropriate standards of infection control and body fluid precautions and protective equipment when necessary.
  3. Ensure that requisitions are completed properly, and the patient demographic, diagnosis, insurance and physician information are included on or attached to the requisitions.  Diagnostic information shall be in a narrative or ICD-9 code format and valid only if legible.
  4. If a patient is a Medicare patient, you must review the National Coverage Decisions (“NCD”) and Local Medical review Policies (“LMRP”) for the tests ordered on the requisition form to determine if an Advance Beneficiary Notice (“ABN”) must be completed.  If the form is needed, correctly complete the form with the patient.
  5. Ensure that the Medicare Secondary Form (“MSP”) is completed when necessary.
  6. Accurately collect all specimens necessary to fulfill the clients’ lab orders.
  7. Provide accurate communication to clients and their staff regarding the proper ordering of lab tests.
  8. Ensure that draw station(s) where you work is kept clean and adequately stocked with supplies every day.
  9. Daily, inform your Phlebotomy Supervisor of job performance concerns, call outs and schedule changes/needs.  Also communication areas of operational concern.
  10. Conduct regular periodic meetings with team members to ensure critical information and direction are being provided in a consistent and timely manner.
  11. Conduct periodic, at least weekly timecard reviews to ensure hours are recorded accurately for team members.

 Required Qualifications:

  • Active WA State Phlebotomy certification
  • Epic user experience
  • Minimum of 5 years' experience in Phlebotomy with at least 2 being in an outpatient setting
  • Supervisory or lead phlebotomist experience is a plus.
