Position Summary

Tampa Family Health Centers is seeking a Financial Counselor to join our team. This role plays a key part in ensuring patients have access to affordable care by determining insurance eligibility, completing financial screenings, and guiding patients through payment options.

The Financial Counselor partners closely with front office, clinical, and support teams to maintain compliance, improve access to care, and support a seamless patient experience.

Essential Responsibilities

  • Screen patients for insurance coverage and verify income eligibility
  • Complete financial re-screens and update demographics and pay categories in the system
  • Review uninsured patients and establish appropriate payment plans and expiration dates
  • Obtain insurance authorizations and coordinate with registration staff
  • Provide patients with required financial documentation and correspondence
  • Ensure sliding fee scale patients complete required acknowledgements
  • Coordinate emergency visit authorizations as needed
  • Maintain strict patient confidentiality in compliance with HIPAA standards
  • Support front office operations as needed during slower periods
  • Recall patients for required screenings based on pay plan guidelines
  • Participate in team meetings and support TFHC’s Mission, Vision, and Values
  • Perform additional duties as assigned

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent required
  • Previous experience in healthcare financial counseling, insurance verification, or patient access preferred

Skills & Abilities

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel) and basic computer systems
  • High level of accuracy and attention to detail
  • Ability to handle sensitive information with professionalism and discretion
  • Comfortable working in a fast-paced, patient-focused environment

Please note that the employee’s initial training schedule may differ from the regular schedule of the position. All new hires, including part-time employees, must be available for up to 40 hours of in-person, on-site training during their first week. Additional mandatory training may continue for approximately two to three weeks, depending on the position and training requirements. Training may take place at a TFHC location other than the employee’s assigned work location.
