SUMMARY:

Works in conjunction with the Laboratory Director to ensure quality of testing and direct supervision of the Core Laboratory (Chemistry/Hematology).
Must maintain accurate test results, quality control and ensure compliance with regard to regulatory agencies.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Provides direct supervision of personnel and function of department
Ensures adequate staffing ratios/division of workload/scheduling
Establishes policies and procedures for section
Ensures accurate test results through performing quality system checks, result review, and regulatory compliance throughout section
Performs competency testing and training along with performance evaluations

Job Responsibilities/Competency:

Obtains and processes specimens for laboratory testing according to department/section policy and procedures.
Verifies accuracy of test specimen before testing.
Performs technical procedures as required by department or director.
Performs all testing in a timely manner as established by departmental policy and performs all test with confidence.
Inspects instruments and verifies that equipment is in proper working order before testing.
Ensures that test results correlate with each other and the patient's clinical situation.
Ensure accurate results through supervision of entire testing process: pre-analytical, analytical, post-analytical, and related functions and systems within.
Follows and audits the Hospital critical value procedure.
Demonstrates proficiency in performing all computer tasks associated with job responsibilities.
Performs scheduled maintenance to assure proper operation of equipment and records the procedures performed.
Performs quality control and quality assurance procedures and instrument checks correctly.
Performs analytical and decision-making functions with minimal supervision.
Has working knowledge of the theory of laboratory procedures.
Prepares and presents continuing education for department personnel.
Applies step-by-step problem solving and thinking patterns
Supervises laboratory personnel as assigned to provide direction, support and technical ability to others.
Audits the performance of all personnel in the department.
Establishes quality systems to ensure departmental goals are met and corrective action is taken if needed.
Responsible team member for scheduling and payroll
Performs other related duties as assigned.

Department Specific Responsibilities Section: Core Lab (Hematology/Chemistry)

Assure that the Core Laboratory maintains equipment, staffing and procedures to meet the needs of the Hospital and community.
Provide leadership to staff to assure all testing meets and exceeds CLIA, CAP, JC and MA State standards.
All CAP checklists required for inspection are utilized and followed. All checklists are prepared for inspection process with all required elements
Participates in all accreditation inspections, including peer inspections
Responsible for all inventory management, including ordering, organizing, and maintain supply stock
Responsible for all instrumentation management including maintenance and troubleshooting
Ensures the Hospital is in compliance with these standards.
Participate in all negotiations with Vendors including but not limited to financial, budget, quality related issues, and supply concerns.
Work with nursing and the medical staff with regard to quality systems, Core Lab related issues and patient safety.
Work with Medical Director to ensure that all Core Lab issues are reported and corrective action taken when needed.
Is the primary source for all training and assessment of personnel in the Core Lab especially when new procedures and equipment are introduced into the department.
Works with the Oncology and Infectious Disease departments to provide specialized testing for this patient population.
Supervises other areas of the laboratory at the discretion of the Admin Director including but not limited to Microbiology, Immunology, and Point of Care Testing
Works with Laboratory Leadership team to ensure compliance with all requirements.

Quality:

Records, tracks, and analyzes all Quality Control, Improvement, and Assurance data. Any metric required by accreditation agencies, directed by Admin Director or Medical Director is recorded and used to maintain and improve functions with in the laboratory.
Participates in the Laboratory Quality Control Improvement process through meetings, QI forms, and process improvement functions.
Responsible for TJC/CAP Accrediting agency requirements, including evidence, documentation, and inspection participation.
Is part of a team effort to ensure quality services.
Offers creative solutions or alternatives to issues or concerns.
Produces quality results.
Continually strives to improve the quality of work.
Accepts responsibility for all work performed and takes appropriate corrective action as needed.


REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • MT/MLS (ASCP) Certification with Bachelor's Degree or equivalent Certification
  • 3-5 years of Clinical Laboratory experience required
  • 3-5 years of Clinical Laboratory supervisory experience preferred
