About the Role

Iron Horse is growing, and we are looking for experienced Tank Car Welders / Railcar Repair Technicians to join our railcar repair operations in Beaumont, TX.

We are specifically looking for candidates who have previous experience working on railcars or tank cars. While strong welding skills are important, this position involves much more than welding. Our team members perform a variety of welding, torch cutting, mechanical repair, fabrication, and general railcar repair tasks throughout the workday.

Our welders primarily use FCAW (Flux Core) and MIG/GMAW welding, along with a significant amount of torch cutting. Stick welding is used occasionally, but is not a primary part of the job.

If you have worked on railcars, tank cars, freight cars, locomotives, or other railroad equipment, we are especially interested in talking with you.

Exceptional candidates with heavy industrial, structural, or heavy-equipment welding experience may also be considered, particularly those with strong FCAW/MIG skills and hands-on mechanical ability.

What You’ll Be Doing
Your day will involve a variety of railcar repair tasks rather than welding continuously throughout the shift.

Welding & Fabrication

  • Perform FCAW (Flux Core) and MIG/GMAW welding on tank cars and other rail equipment
  • Perform occasional SMAW/Stick welding as required
  • Repair and fabricate steel components according to drawings, work instructions, and repair specifications
  • Prepare surfaces and weld areas using grinders and other tools
  • Inspect completed welds for quality and proper workmanship

Cutting & Mechanical Repair

  • Perform extensive oxy-fuel torch cutting to remove and repair damaged components
  • Remove, replace, and repair railcar components
  • Perform hands-on mechanical repair and maintenance as part of railcar repair work
  • Use hand tools, power tools, pneumatic tools, jacks, hoists, and other shop equipment
  • Assist with disassembly and reassembly of railcar components
  • Troubleshoot repair issues and determine the appropriate tools and methods to complete the work

General Railcar Repair

  • Read and interpret weld symbols, drawings, repair instructions, and work scopes
  • Enter tank cars and work in confined spaces as required
  • Work safely at heights and around industrial rail equipment
  • Follow all company safety procedures and quality standards
  • Document completed work and communicate repair issues or concerns to supervision
  • Work effectively with inspectors, leads, and other members of the repair team

What We're Looking For

Required

  • Proven experience performing FCAW and/or MIG/GMAW welding in an industrial environment
  • Strong hands-on mechanical aptitude
  • Experience using an oxy-fuel torch for cutting
  • Ability to produce clean, consistent, structurally sound welds
  • Ability to read weld symbols, drawings, and work scopes
  • Ability to safely use grinders, torches, hand tools, and power tools
  • Ability to lift up to 75 lbs. independently and team lift up to 150 lbs.
  • Comfortable working at heights, outdoors, and in confined spaces
  • Commitment to working safely and following established procedures
  • Reliable attendance and dependable work habits

Preferred

  • Previous railcar or tank car repair experience
  • Experience repairing freight cars, tank cars, locomotives, or other railroad equipment
  • 2+ years of industrial, structural, heavy-equipment, or railcar welding experience

  • Experience with FCAW welding on heavy steel
  • Familiarity with railroad repair standards and safety practices
  • Experience interpreting railcar repair instructions, drawings, or work scopes
  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Valid driver's license

The Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate is more than a welder. We are looking for someone who is comfortable working on heavy equipment, diagnosing what needs to be repaired, and using whatever combination of welding, cutting, mechanical work, fabrication, and hand tools is necessary to get the job done.

The person who will be most successful in this position can step onto a railcar and understand how to approach a repair without needing to be taught the basics of industrial repair work.

We are particularly interested in candidates with experience in:

  • Railcar or tank car repair
  • FCAW and MIG welding
  • Oxy-fuel torch cutting
  • Mechanical repair and component replacement
  • Heavy steel fabrication
  • Grinding and weld preparation
  • Reading welding symbols and repair specifications
  • Working around railroad equipment and industrial hazards
  • Meeting strict quality and safety requirements

You should take pride in your workmanship, be comfortable working independently, and know when to ask questions or involve a lead or inspector.

  • Versatile:
Comfortable moving between welding, torch cutting, mechanical work, fabrication, and other repair tasks throughout the day.
  • Quality-Driven: Takes pride in producing clean, consistent, high-quality repairs.
  • Mechanically Inclined: Understands how equipment works and can troubleshoot and repair mechanical problems.
  • Safety-Minded: Understands hazards and follows procedures
  • Reliable: Shows up ready to work and can be counted on by the rest of the crew.
  • Detail-Oriented: Understands that weld quality, repair accuracy, and following specifications matter.
  • Coachability: Open to feedback and learning rail-specific standards
  • Team-Oriented: Works effectively with welders, mechanics, inspectors, leads, and other departments.

Work Environment

  • Industrial rail yard and repair shop environment
  • Work performed around railcars and other heavy railroad equipment
  • Exposure to heat, cold, noise, welding fumes, dust, and other industrial conditions
  • PPE and respirator use required
  • Confined-space work may be required
  • Elevated work and work at heights may be required
  • Frequent standing, bending, climbing, kneeling, lifting, and working in awkward positions

Why Join Us?

  • $20–$25/hr based on experience
  • Day shift: 6:00 AM – 2:30 PM
  • Stable, full-time employment
  • Growing railcar repair operation
  • Variety of work — you're not welding the same thing all day
  • Opportunity for advancement
  • Strong focus on safety and quality
  • Full benefits package, including medical, dental, vision, and 401(k)
