Job Description:
Plans, organizes and coordinates the hazardous materials and processes, safety, compliance and monitoring activities to ensure the safety of the university community. This includes providing consultation and guidance, conducting audits and facility inspections, conducting training, data management and addressing issues and suggesting remediation steps or improvements. Serves as a technical advisor.
Position Salary Range:
$67,000 - $70,000; DOE
Essential Duties:
Conducts site visits to audit, provide consultation and inspections of university facilities using hazardous materials including: biological, chemical, lasers, and radiological materials, to ensure compliance with federal, state, local regulations, codes, and university requirements.
Develops and implements pollution prevention programs and sustainability activities to support university goals.
Interprets and ensures effectiveness of specific methodology and key performance indicators for the department including the effectiveness of safety education.
Investigates and remediates problems with the safe and legal handling of hazardous materials.
Trains staff to take measurements and prepares required reports for tracking, decision-making and/or compliance requirements.
Communicates with customers on safety-related matters.
In collaboration with Sr. Safety Partner, reviews construction plans for new and existing buildings to ensure compliance with life safety regulatory requirements, codes and standards to assure compliance prior to occupancy.
Reviews, interprets and evaluates compliance activities and policies to ensure safety and recommends and/or implements required safety changes.
Manages relationship with regulatory agencies to stay abreast of changes, manage compliance, and ensure facility and personnel safety.
Ensures incoming and outgoing hazardous materials shipments are properly processed.
Provides guidance to stakeholders to ensure the safe handling of hazardous materials, including biologicals, chemicals, and radioactive materials.
Establishes procedures and trains other employees in how to manage data and operate specialized equipment, such as devices used for gas detection, mercury vapor analysis, and radiation detection.
Operates specialized equipment used for gas detection, mercury vapor analysis, and radiation detection.
Ensures accurate inventory and accuracy of storage management systems for hazardous materials such as biologicals, chemicals, and radioactive and potentially radioactive substances.
Leads special studies and project teams as required by supervisor.
Designs, develops and facilitates safety education, outreach and workshops for faculty, staff, and students in the use of departmental data management and processing tools.
Creates and maintains safety databases using various information systems or user-specific software.
Conducts accident investigations and recommends solutions and best practices by communicating verbally or in writing with the stakeholder.
Serves as liaison with subject matter experts in the development and facilitation of high impact training materials and participates in logistics planning, communication and marketing.
Reviews accuracy of reports for environmental and safety programs ensuring federal, state, and local regulatory requirements are satisfied.
Serves as a member of the department emergency response team and participates in emergency drills and actual emergencies.
Stays abreast of current and proposed changes in federal, state and industry regulations and requirements.
Develops pollution prevention and sustainability education programs.
This position will, at times, be required to work outside of normal business hours to meet business needs.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge of chemistry, hazardous materials, inventory management, monitoring equipment, and response procedures to investigate incidents, monitor a variety of situations, maintain records and generate reports.
Knowledge of modern radiation principles related to the recognition, prevention and control of radiation health hazards both ionizing and non-ionizing.
Knowledge of the function of an academic research laboratory.
Knowledge of local, state, and federal/regulations for hazardous materials/waste and environmental sampling.
Knowledge of biosafety and biosecurity inspection requirements. Knowledge of chemical compatibility and hazard classes.
Knowledge of hazardous materials management practices and techniques.
Knowledge of requirements governing the safe use of radioactive materials.
Skill in interpreting and applying, federal, state, and local biosafety laws and regulations.
Skill in effective communication, both verbal and written.
Skill in maintaining effective working relationships.

Working Environment:
Activities are performed in an environmentally controlled office setting subject to extended periods of sitting, keyboarding and manipulating a computer mouse 75 percent; required to stand for varying lengths of time and walk moderate distances to perform work 10 percent.
Ability to clearly communicate verbally, read, write, see and hear to perform essential functions.
Frequent bending, reaching, lifting, pushing and pulling up to 25 pounds 15 percent.
Regular activities require ability to quickly change priorities, which may include or are subject to resolution of conflicts.
Works in indoor and outdoor environments that may include extreme weather conditions; hot in summer and cold in winter.
Participates in respiratory protection program; assists with respiratory fit testing and training.
