JOB SUMMARY:

The Histology Lab Assistant is responsible for assisting Histology with a variety of tasks. Also cleans

and maintains assigned areas and performs other duties as needed. This position requires attention to detail,

the ability to multitask, be a team player. The Histology Lab Assistant may be involved in minimal

handling of Hazardous waste.

 

Employees are responsible for following all Company policies and procedures. These policies and

procedures will include adherence to regulatory standards such as CAP, CLIA and OSHA,

including safety standards in performing all aspects of the functions below.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

I:

  1. Loading/Unloading slides
  2. Running down slides in a series of chemicals in preparation for coverslipping
  3. Flatting and organizing slides in preparation for the tech to QC
  4. Printing run reports for complete cases
  5. Scanning predictive markers cases utilizing digital imagining systems
  6. Instrument maintenance to include topping off chemicals, discarding waste and running cleaning cycles.
  7. Taking instrument offline and bringing them back on line
  8. May perform other duties as assigned.

Lead:

  1.  All duties listed above
  2.  In the absence of the Histology Lab Manager responsible for department oversight and supervision
  3.  Assist in new employee orientation and training
  4.  Assist with updating and maintaining Accessioning Procedures
  5. Troubleshooting/problem solving
  6. Maintain communication with the Histology Lab Manager

PHYSICAL/MENTAL DEMANDS, ENVIRONMENT:

  1. In exercising these functions, the employee must be able to lift up to 40 lbs occasionally, and/or up to 20 lbs frequently, and/or up to 10 lbs routinely to move objects.
  2. Employee may be exposed to blood products, knife cuts, hazardous waste and chemical fumes, so appropriate precautionary measures must be followed at all times.  Certain situations require eye protection, mask, lab coat and or gloves. Hazardous Waste training required.

  1. IHC and Special Stainers
  2. Digital Imaging Systems
  3. Coverslippers
  4. Drying Ovens
  5. Typical  lab equipment
  6. Computer and printer

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

High School Diploma or GED

Level    I: less than 3 years of relevant work experience

            II: 4-7 years of relevant work experience

            III: 8+ years of relevant work experience

            (Experience to be determined at the discretion of the Histology Manager or Accessioning

             Supervisor)
