Job Summary:

Provides nursing care to patients/ families receiving endoscopic and other special procedures, by utilizing the nursing process. Assist physicians with GI procedures in addition to performing admission assessment of patients prior to scheduled procedure, minimal/moderate sedation, assessment and monitoring during procedure, and recovery post procedure. Provides discharge instructions and patient education. Supervises non-licensed personnel who are assigned to patient care. Works collaboratively with Staff nurses within the hospital-setting. Provides safe, knowledgeable, compassionate, educative, individualized goal-directed nursing care to patients. Meets the needs of the nursing service as demanded by the schedule, particularly when overtime hours and time changes become necessary. RN needs to be able to take on-call on weekdays, weekends, and holiday weekends as needed. This position is represented by CNA.

Job Requirements:

Education and Work Experience:

  • Graduate of a school of nursing: Required
  • One-year recent acute care RN experience: Required
  • GI experience and other special procedures: Preferred

Licenses/Certifications:

  • Current RN license in state of practice: Required
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from approved vendor per AH policy: Required
  • Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification from approved vendor per AH policy: Required
  • Registered Nurse (RN) license in state of practice: Required

Facility Specific License/Certifications:

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from approved vendor per AH policy: Required
  • AHA-ACLS or ARC-ALS: Required

Essential Functions:

  • Responsible for ensuring all equipment for GI procedures and other special procedures are properly set up. Must demonstrate competency in techniques of endoscope manipulation, knowledge of complications associated with endoscopy and their symptoms, appropriate interventions under the direction of the endoscopist. Assisting the physician and/ or advanced provider during diagnostic and therapeutic procedures to promote optimal patient outcomes.
  • Completes physical and social history within 30 minutes after patient’s arrival. Recognizes symptoms of cardiac or respiratory distress or other impending emergencies. Participates in the universal protocol time out process on each patient.
  • Reviews medical history, physical examination, nursing care plan and all available assessment data. Identifies abnormal diagnostic data and reports it to the appropriate person. Initiates a multidisciplinary, goal oriented care plan for each patient in collaboration with members of the health care team and provides care based on that plan.
  • Follows hospital policy for Minimal/Moderate sedation. Including pre and post assessment. Identifies common recurrent patient problems, symptoms and behavioral changes using standards of care. Consistently performs necessary unit specific safety & quality control checks (i.e. VO/TO Read Back, crash cart checks, refrigerator logs & outdate checks).
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned.
