Position Summary

The Assistant Meat Manager supports the Meat Manager in overseeing all aspects of Meat Department operations, including merchandising, production, inventory management, customer service, food safety compliance, associate development, and financial performance. This position plays a critical role in maintaining department standards, ensuring product quality and freshness, driving sales, minimizing shrink, and creating an exceptional customer experience.

Key Responsibilities Department Operations
  • Assist in managing daily Meat Department operations.
  • Ensure meat and seafood products are properly cut, packaged, labeled, stocked, and merchandised.
  • Monitor department conditions to maintain freshness, quality, and product availability.
  • Assist with ordering, receiving, inventory control, and production planning.
  • Support execution of sales promotions, seasonal programs, and merchandising initiatives.
  • Help ensure department readiness and operational excellence throughout operating hours.
Customer Service
  • Deliver exceptional customer service and promote a customer-first culture.
  • Assist customers with product selection, preparation recommendations, custom orders, and special requests.
  • Resolve customer concerns professionally and efficiently.
  • Provide product knowledge to enhance customer confidence and satisfaction.
  • Support initiatives that drive customer loyalty and department sales.
Leadership & Team Development
  • Assist with training, coaching, and developing Meat Department associates.
  • Provide daily direction and support to team members.
  • Promote teamwork, accountability, and operational excellence.
  • Reinforce company policies, procedures, and performance expectations.
  • Assume department leadership responsibilities in the absence of the Meat Manager.
Production, Merchandising & Inventory Management
  • Ensure product displays are fully stocked, visually appealing, and maintained according to company standards.
  • Monitor inventory levels and identify replenishment needs.
  • Assist with production schedules to support sales while minimizing waste.
  • Help control shrink through effective ordering, rotation, handling, and inventory practices.
  • Ensure pricing, labeling, and merchandising standards are consistently executed.
Food Safety & Compliance
  • Ensure compliance with food safety, sanitation, health, and regulatory requirements.
  • Monitor proper product handling, storage temperatures, dating, labeling, and rotation procedures.
  • Maintain clean, organized, and safe work areas.
  • Promote safe operation of department equipment and tools.
  • Support department audit readiness and compliance initiatives.
Financial Performance
  • Assist in achieving department sales, gross profit, labor, and shrink goals.
  • Monitor operational performance and identify opportunities for improvement.
  • Support efficient labor utilization and productivity initiatives.
  • Assist with inventory management practices that contribute to profitability.
  • Contribute to overall department success through strong operational execution.
Qualifications
  • Previous meat department, grocery, retail, food service, or supervisory experience preferred.
  • Knowledge of meat cutting, merchandising, inventory management, and food safety standards preferred.
  • Strong customer service and communication skills.
  • Ability to lead, motivate, and develop associates.
  • Strong organizational, problem-solving, and time management abilities.
  • Basic computer and operational knowledge.
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment.
Physical Requirements
  • Frequent standing, walking, bending, reaching, pushing, pulling, and lifting.
  • Ability to lift and move products consistent with department requirements.
  • Ability to safely operate meat department equipment.
  • Ability to work in refrigerated environments for extended periods.
  • Flexible availability, including evenings, weekends, and holidays.
