Salary Range: $45,000/year

Type: Full Time - Non-Exempt  (Hourly)

Schedule: 40 hours per week

Reports to: Senior Childcare Director  

 

Position Overview

The Certified Lead Preschool Teacher is responsible for providing a safe, nurturing, and developmentally appropriate learning environment in accordance with South Carolina DSS licensing regulations and YMCA standards. This role supports early childhood development through structured curriculum, positive guidance, and strong family engagement while upholding the YMCA mission and core values of Caring, Honesty, Respect, and Responsibility.


What You’ll Do:


Child Development & Instruction

  • Plan and implement developmentally appropriate lessons aligned with the South Carolina Early Learning Standards. 
  • Create a structured, engaging classroom environment that supports social, emotional, cognitive, and physical development. 
  • Use positive guidance techniques to support behavior and classroom management. 

Supervision & Safety

  • Maintain active visual and auditory supervision at all times. 
  • Ensure compliance with DSS staff-to-child ratios and supervision standards. 
  • Follow all health, safety, and sanitation guidelines. 
  • Respond appropriately to incidents, injuries, and emergencies. 

Family Engagement

  • Build positive relationships with families and maintain open communication regarding child progress and development. 
  • Provide regular updates, feedback, and support to parents/guardians. 

Compliance & Documentation

  • Maintain accurate records including attendance, incident reports, and child development documentation. 
  • Ensure classroom and program meet DSS licensing and accreditation standards. 
  • Complete required trainings, including abuse risk management and mandated reporting. 

Team Collaboration

  • Work collaboratively with staff and leadership to support program success. 
  • Participate in staff meetings, trainings, and professional development opportunities. 

What We’re Looking For

  • High school diploma or GED required; Bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood Education or related field required. 
  • Must meet South Carolina DSS requirements for Preschool/Childcare Teachers, including: 
  • Minimum required early childhood training hours or credentials.
  • Background check clearance.
  • Experience working with preschool-aged children (6 weeks–5 years preferred; 2 years-5 years required). 
  • Knowledge of child development and age-appropriate teaching strategies. 
  • Ability to maintain classroom structure while creating a nurturing environment. 
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills. 
  • Ability to relate effectively to children, families, and staff from diverse backgrounds. 

Certifications & Requirements

  • CPR/First Aid certification (or ability to obtain within 30 days of hire).
  • Completion of required DSS and YMCA trainings (including abuse prevention / Praesidium training).
  • Compliance with all mandated reporting requirements.
