A public elementary school district in Illinois is seeking a Speech-Language Pathologist (SLP) with American Sign Language (ASL) fluency to conduct a one-time student evaluation. The district serves deaf and hard of hearing students in inclusive educational settings and is committed to ensuring appropriate communication access and services. This short-term, in-person role focuses exclusively on completing a comprehensive communication evaluation for a single student.
What You’ll Do
- Conduct a functional communication evaluation for a fifth-grade deaf student.
- Assess the student’s use of American Sign Language for educational access.
- Review existing IEP documentation, interpreter supports, and communication accommodations.
- Evaluate communication methods used across school, home, and community environments.
- Complete assessment activities in one or multiple sessions as appropriate.
- Prepare and submit a written evaluation report to the district upon completion.
- Coordinate with district staff to ensure evaluation timelines and compliance requirements are met.
What You’ll Need
- Valid Speech-Language Pathologist licensure.
- Demonstrated fluency in American Sign Language (ASL).
- Experience evaluating deaf or hard of hearing students.
- Knowledge of functional communication assessments and IEP-related evaluation requirements.
- Ability to conduct in-person evaluations during school hours (7:45 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.).
- Ability to pass or provide a clean background check acceptable to the district.
Bonus Skills (Optional)
- Experience working with students who use cochlear implants.
- Familiarity with educational interpreters and multimodal communication systems.
- Prior experience completing short-term or contract-based school evaluations.
