A public elementary school district in Illinois is seeking a Speech-Language Pathologist (SLP) with American Sign Language (ASL) fluency to conduct a one-time student evaluation. The district serves deaf and hard of hearing students in inclusive educational settings and is committed to ensuring appropriate communication access and services. This short-term, in-person role focuses exclusively on completing a comprehensive communication evaluation for a single student.

What You’ll Do
  • Conduct a functional communication evaluation for a fifth-grade deaf student.
  • Assess the student’s use of American Sign Language for educational access.
  • Review existing IEP documentation, interpreter supports, and communication accommodations.
  • Evaluate communication methods used across school, home, and community environments.
  • Complete assessment activities in one or multiple sessions as appropriate.
  • Prepare and submit a written evaluation report to the district upon completion.
  • Coordinate with district staff to ensure evaluation timelines and compliance requirements are met.

What You’ll Need
  • Valid Speech-Language Pathologist licensure.
  • Demonstrated fluency in American Sign Language (ASL).
  • Experience evaluating deaf or hard of hearing students.
  • Knowledge of functional communication assessments and IEP-related evaluation requirements.
  • Ability to conduct in-person evaluations during school hours (7:45 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.).
  • Ability to pass or provide a clean background check acceptable to the district.

Bonus Skills (Optional)
  • Experience working with students who use cochlear implants.
  • Familiarity with educational interpreters and multimodal communication systems.
  • Prior experience completing short-term or contract-based school evaluations.
