Summary

 

The Auxiliary Operator is responsible for carrying out the duties assigned by the Operations Manager and Supervisor to ensure safe, proper, and efficient plant operations. The Auxiliary Operator works as part of a two-person shift for the proper operation of all machinery and related equipment as directed by the Control Room Operator. This is a full-time, hourly, union position. The Auxiliary Operator must be willing to become a member of the Local 68 International Union of Operating Engineers Bargaining Unit. This position is in Trenton, NJ. The compensation for this position is $50.22 with a mandatory annuity of $4.70 for an hourly rate of $45.52.

 

 

Responsibilities

 

  • Responsible for interfacing with the Control Room Operator and Operations Supervisor to ensure proper operation of all plant systems.
  • Works within two-person shift to operate, service and maintain diesel engine generators, hot water generators (boilers), chillers and remote site boilers to include operation of all associated equipment.
  • Follows standard and established practices, refers to operation and service

manuals to evaluate and maintain proper operation of all machinery.

  • Through personal attentiveness ensures that operating requirements of the cogeneration district heating/cooling processes and electric generation are met for uninterrupted hot water/chilled water supply to the customers and continuous operation of stationary diesel generators.
  • Responsible for monitoring and inspecting all plant operating areas and interfacing with the Maintenance Department as needed to report equipment in need of repair or areas in need of attention.
  • Responsible for cleaning of areas assigned by the Operations Supervisor.
  • Responsible for making routine rounds of all company and customer operating areas and keeping logs and records related to these systems.
  • During outages, responsibilities may be assigned outside of normal work duties for certain maintenance items.
  • Required to relieve other Auxiliary Operators and cover shifts during times of absenteeism.
  • Responsible for following plant safety procedures, guidelines, and rules as job functions are performed and reporting any unsafe condition or act to the Operations Supervisor.
  • Responsible for knowing and following the plant environmental procedures and reporting any environmental conditions or acts to the Control Room Operator or Operations Manager/Supervisor.
  • Responsible for knowing and following Operations procedures and policies.
  • Required to actively participate in and complete all required training programs.

 

Examples of Work:

 

  • Monitors and records pressures, temperatures, fuel consumption, etc. on

the operating equipment.  Evaluates readings to determine operating efficiency and conformance to standards.  Identifies and alerts Control Room Operator to symptoms of needed maintenance action.

  • Maintains fuel, hydraulic, coolant, water levels of engines, chillers, boilers, expansion tanks, compressors, pumps, and related equipment. Services filters, strainers, etc., as needed.
  • Monitors machinery for noise, vibration, etc. to insure the safe operating

condition of machinery and takes immediate corrective action should an

unsafe condition exists.

  • Applies knowledge of hand and power tools and general repair knowledge to assist in the maintenance and repair of engines, chillers, boilers, compressors, pumps, and all associated equipment.  Displays mechanical aptitude in the safe and proper use of tools.
  • Cleans, paints, and maintains the engines and other equipment and performs general cleaning including mopping up spills in the engine-boiler room area and any other areas to include facilities serviced / operated by Vicinity Energy

 

Other Functions:

 

  • Responsible for maintaining a positive attitude, professional and courteous behavior, motivation, initiative, cooperation, and participation.
  • Responsible for maintaining a level of physical fitness necessary to perform all related job elements and physically demanding tasks (i.e., climbing, lifting, carrying, and transporting heavy objects, standing for long durations, crawling through portholes, manways and working in confined spaces, working outdoors during summer and winter, and wearing of personal protection equipment as required).
  • Acts as a team member with all employees of Vicinity staff.
  • Complies with all Vicinity policies and procedures.
  • Must be able to work a rotating shift schedule.
  • Performs all other tasks as instructed.

 

Basic Qualifications

 

  • Ability to communicate effectively in English.
  • High school diploma or equivalency
  • Minimum N.J. High pressure in charge Black Seal Boiler Operator license
  • Minimum three (3) years of experience in a work-related industry; preferably cogeneration/district energy
  • Knowledge of boilers, reciprocating engines, refrigeration equipment, and fuel systems

 

Preferred Qualifications

 

  • Blue Seal Engineers license or ability to obtain upon hire.
  • USEPA Refrigeration Certification – Type III or Universal; or ability to obtain certification upon hiring

 

Physical Requirements 

  • Submit to company provided pre-employment physical exam and drug screening.
  • Must possess a valid driver license in good standing in order to operate a company vehicle. Must have and maintain a driving record meeting the standards of the company.

  • Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. of weight
  • Eyesight corrected to 20/40 to accurately read and interpret instruments and gauges.
  • Hear and understand audible alarms, detect changes in noise levels of rotating equipment and portable radio communication.
