Description

 PURPOSE

TRIO Student Support Services (SSS) is a federally funded program designed to support eligible college students in achieving academic success, persistence, graduation, and transfer goals through academic support, mentoring, advising, and skill development services.The purpose of the TRIO Peer Tutor/Mentor position is to support Student Support Services students in becoming confident, independent learners. Peer Tutor/Mentors provide academic assistance, encouragement, mentoring, and positive peer support within the SSS Learning Lab and through remote support using Microsoft Teams.Peer Tutor/Mentors help students strengthen subject knowledge, study skills, time management, organization, and self-confidence while encouraging use of campus resources and support services.Both work-study and non work-study eligible students may be considered. 


RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Provide subject-specific tutoring on a drop-in or assigned basis.
  • Provide peer mentoring and academic support in the Learning Lab and remotely through Microsoft Teams.
  • Encourage students to seek help early and utilize faculty office hours and campus resources.
  • Maintain a welcoming, organized, and inclusive Learning Lab environment.
  • Assist with office duties, special projects, and routine cleaning or organizational tasks as assigned.
  • Complete tasks assigned by the TRIO Project Director and, in the absence of the Director, by Student Support Services staff.
  • Maintain confidentiality regarding student information and academic performance.
  • Keep accurate tutoring/mentoring records and submit required logs and timesheets.
  • Check email and Microsoft Teams regularly for updates and communication.
  • Attend required trainings, meetings, and staff development sessions.
  • Notify the TRIO Project Director as soon as possible if unable to attend a scheduled session or shift.

  • Be prepared for tutoring and mentoring sessions.
  • Communicate professionally and respectfully with students, staff, and faculty.
  • Serve as a positive role model who encourages student confidence and independence.
  • Guide students in developing learning strategies rather than completing work for them.
  • Be punctual, dependable, and professional in all responsibilities.
  • Support a positive and supportive learning environment for all students.
