Overview

We are looking for a skilled and self-motivated Mechanical Engineer to join our Maintenance team located in Roanoke VA. This salary exempt position reports to the Maintenance Manager. 

Responsibilities

Maintenance & Reliability

  • Perform preventive and predictive maintenance on mechanical equipment (pumps, compressors, conveyors, gearboxes, rotary equipment, hydraulics/pneumatics).
  • Diagnose mechanical failures and execute corrective actions to minimize downtime.
  • Conduct root cause analysis (RCA) on recurring equipment issues and implement solutions.
  • Monitor and optimize equipment performance, reliability, and efficiency.

Equipment & Asset Management

  • Develop and update maintenance procedures, SOPs, and equipment maintenance history in CMMS.
  • Ensure critical spares availability and support inventory optimization.
  • Assist in planning shutdowns/turnarounds and coordinate mechanical activities.

Project & Improvement Work

  • Support installation, commissioning, and modification of mechanical systems.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement, cost reduction, and energy efficiency projects.
  • Review technical drawings, P&IDs, manuals, and ensure compliance with mechanical standards.

Safety & Compliance

  • Adhere to all safety, environmental, and regulatory requirements.
  • Lead or participate in safety inspections, risk assessments, and permit-to-work system.
  • Ensure contractors and maintenance teams fulfill company safety and quality expectations.

Cross-functional Collaboration

  • Work closely with production, electrical, instrumentation, and reliability teams.
  • Provide technical guidance to maintenance technicians and support training when needed.
  • Other duties as directed by the Maintenance Manager.

Qualifications

Education & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or related discipline.

Technical Skills

  • Strong knowledge of rotating equipment, lubrication systems, bearings, alignment, vibration basics.
  • Familiarity with reliability tools (RCA, FMEA, 5-Why).
  • Ability to read/interpret mechanical drawings, P&IDs, and technical documentation.

Soft Skills

  • Strong analytical and troubleshooting abilities.
  • Effective communication and teamwork skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks, prioritize, and work under pressure.
  • Safety-oriented mindset with attention to detail.

  • Relocation Assistance: No relocation assistance is offered for this role. Candidates must be able to commute to the work location independently

Preferred But Not Required

  • 2 years of maintenance experience in industrial environments (cement, mining, manufacturing, energy, or heavy industry preferred).
  • Experience with maintenance planning and CMMS (SAP, Maximo, Infor, etc.).
  • Experience with condition monitoring (vibration analysis, thermography, ultrasound).
  • Certifications (e.g., CMRP, maintenance planning, safety training).
  • Experience in continuous improvement methodologies (Lean, 5S, TPM).
