Emma Willard School seeks an enthusiastic and dedicated Computer Science Instructor for a teaching position in the 2026-2027 academic school year. Given the late timing of this opening, the position will be re-posted for the 2027-2028 year and beyond; the candidate who steps into the role for the upcoming year will be invited to re-apply if interested in a long-term position.


The instructor should be prepared to teach Computer Science Explorations, Java and two sections of Precalculus or another traditional mathematics course. The ideal candidate will use creative and innovative teaching practices to bring out the best in each student and will collaborate regularly with other members of the Math Department. 

The Emma Willard faculty use a variety of pedagogical tools and techniques, including but not limited to experiential learning and reflection practices, to help students gain confidence and ownership over their learning. Dedication to the holistic wellness of students is essential, as is comfort in frequent communication with students’ advisors and guardians. Emma Willard School faculty regularly participate in community-wide professional development and each faculty member works with their department chair to develop a plan for their individual professional growth. Faculty are given the opportunity to regularly participate in professional learning through the school’s Center for Teaching and Learning. 


As a boarding school, Emma Willard asks all teachers to contribute to the overall life of the school. All full-time teachers serve as advisors and support our co-curricular program, which includes activities like advising a student club or coaching a sport. 


We seek someone who is committed to navigating today’s changing and diverse landscape to help the school promote and nurture diversity, equity, and inclusion. Key Areas of Responsibility:

  • Teach four sections of computer science/mathematics

  • Create and administer appropriate assessments as consistent with departmental philosophy and practice

  • Grade assessments and offer substantive feedback within a timely manner

  • Keep accurate records of assignments, attendance, and grades on an online learning management system

  • Compose student comments quarterly or as assigned

  • Provide individual support to students as needed

  • Communicate with students’ advisors, guardians, and/or houseparents as appropriate

  • Participate in school-wide functions and events

  • Attend and contribute to departmental, faculty, and faculty/staff meetings

  • Act as academic advisor to a cohort of 4-6 students of the same grade level, meeting weekly with the group and with individual students

  • Lead co-curricular activities (coaching, advising, etc.)

  • Be a positive force in the lives of students

 

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, mathematics or a related field

  • Proficiency in programming with Java

  • Ability to be a strong advocate for the Emma Willard School mission

  • Demonstrated excellence in course design, planning, and implementation

  • Strong desire to contribute to a collaborative course-level team

  • Working knowledge of Google, Microsoft Word, comfort with online learning-management systems, and enthusiasm for experimenting with learning technologies

  • Patience, enthusiasm, and the ability to manage priorities and meet deadlines

  • Demonstrated commitment to professional growth and development

  • Demonstrated superior judgment

  • Valid driver's license


Preferred Qualifications/Competencies:

  • Advanced degree in computer science, mathematics or in education

  • 3 years of teaching experience

  • Experience with student-centered teaching practices like project-based learning, problem-based learning, and community engagement in a mathematics classroom

Salary

$61,260 - $121,510 based on education and experience.
