Comfort Systems USA Southwest is seeking an Assistant Project Manager to help plan, direct, and coordinate assigned mechanical, plumbing, and sheet metal construction projects. Working under the mentorship of a Project Manager and Operations Manager, this role supports projects from preconstruction turnover through closeout.
This is an opportunity for an experienced construction professional to expand project leadership skills while taking meaningful responsibility for budgets, schedules, contracts, procurement, billing, cost control, and team coordination.
What you will do
- Support and manage day-to-day operations for assigned projects, exercising sound independent judgment within established project objectives and policies.
- Partner with field supervision to build cohesive project teams, plan labor resources, monitor productivity, and keep work aligned with schedule and budget.
- Serve as a liaison among internal and external groups, acting independently on matters within the role's assigned responsibilities.
- Prepare, review, update, and distribute project budgets and schedules; monitor cost control, forecasting, financial performance, and monthly contract valuations.
- Oversee contract administration and documentation to reduce risk, avoid claims, and protect the interests of the company and its clients.
- Coordinate preconstruction turnover, permitting, project setup, scheduling, submittal management, and closeout activities.
- Coordinate material and equipment procurement, execute buyout plans, and negotiate and administer subcontract agreements.
- Develop billing schedules of values; manage progress billings, retention, receivables, and collection activity in accordance with due dates.
- Price, negotiate, document, and process change conditions and change orders.
- Review and approve subcontractor and supplier invoices, and manage tools and rental equipment across assigned projects.
- Help ensure assigned projects are properly staffed and assist with labor resource loading and productivity review.
- Communicate effectively with clients, subcontractors, suppliers, field teams, and internal partners to keep project activity coordinated.
- Comply with company policies and safety practices, and exercise stop-work authority whenever an unsafe condition is present.
What you bring
- Bachelor's degree from a four-year college or university, or at least 7 years of progressive construction experience.
- Experience supporting or managing mechanical, plumbing, and/or sheet metal construction projects, including budgets, schedules, documentation, and closeout.
- Ability to make independent decisions about project methods and complexities while seeking guidance on critical issues, new concepts, and policy matters.
- Working knowledge of contracts, procurement, subcontract administration, billing, change management, labor productivity, cost control, and forecasting.
- Ability to communicate clearly in writing and in presentations with customers, clients, managers, teams, and the public.
- Ability to solve practical problems, follow written, oral, diagram, and schedule-based instructions, and apply sound judgment in standardized situations.
- Ability to calculate percentages, proportions, area, circumference, volume, and other construction-related figures.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, and Project.
- A cooperative, professional approach and the ability to perform effectively under pressure while managing competing deadlines.
