Job Purpose

A skilled manager who can join our team and play a key role in managing automated test and assembly systems that are used in the production of semiconductor laser diode products. In this role the candidate will be responsible for sustainment of existing test and optics assembly systems ensuring up time for production activities, develop roadmaps for system and process improvements, and implement these changes to ensure Leonardo can maintain efficient high-volume manufacturing. This role will also require mentoring and developing junior engineers that are part of the team.


Key Responsibilities

  • Own and lead test process and test systems for semiconductor devices including laser diode chips, bars, arrays, and integrated assemblies.
  • Own and lead assembly processes and automated assembly systems specifically in the optics assembly and optics manufacturing area for semiconductor laser arrays and laser systems.
  • Serve as the primary technical expert on the automated systems for testing and optics assembly.
  • Analyze and summarize data collected on the test and assembly systems. Present data to functional teams to support production operations, trouble shooting activities, and engineering builds.
  • Lead validation and implementation of design changes, documentation accuracy, and process stability.
  • Partner with R&D, Product Development, and Operations to guide new product introduction (NPI) from prototype through full‑scale manufacturing ensuring test and optics assembly system readiness.
  • Architect and optimize automated test/optics assembly equipment, fixtures, and software to improve throughput, accuracy, and repeatability.
  • Champion best practices in test methodology, statistical process control (SPC), and data‑driven decision‑making.
  • Mentor and support junior engineers and technicians, providing technical guidance and training.
  • Ensure compliance with quality, safety, and reliability standards across all test and optics assembly operations.


Skills & Qualifications:


  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degrees in electrical engineering, Physics, Materials Science, or Management.
  • 10+ years’ experience in semiconductor device testing, optoelectronics, or laser diode characterization.
  • Proven ability to diagnose complex test issues and implement engineering‑level solutions.
  • Strong background with automated test systems, data acquisition, and statistical analysis tools.
  • Strong background with automated optics assembly systems, data acquisition, and analysis tools.
  • Excellent communication skills and demonstrated success working cross‑functionally.


Preferred Skills

  • Experience with high‑power laser diodes, photonics packaging, or reliability testing.
  • Proficiency in test automation programming (Python, LabVIEW, MATLAB, C/C++).
  • Hands‑on experience with DOE, SPC, FMEA, and other structured problem‑solving methodologies.
  • Familiarity with high‑volume manufacturing environments and continuous improvement frameworks.
