JOB DESCRIPTION 

Summary: 

The Sonographer position plays a vital role in providing diagnostic imaging and monitoring prenatal and gynecological conditions for our patients. Sonographers are responsible for performing sonographic examinations using specialized equipment to visualize internal organs and tissues to assist in the diagnosis and treatment of various medical conditions.  

Essential Functions: 

  • Perform accurate OB/GYN ultrasound procedures and scans of internal organs, tissues, and blood flow.  

  • Analyze and evaluate images assessing the quality and clarity of images. 

  • Prepare exam rooms and ultrasound equipment to conduct sonography examinations in accordance with infectious disease, sterilization, and patient safety protocols, policies, and procedures.  

  • Effectively communicate and prepare patients for exams by explaining procedures and answering questions and concerns. 

  • Responsible for maintaining accurate records of ultrasound procedures, including patient data, images, and relevant information. 

  • Secures patient information and maintains patient confidence by completing and safeguarding electronic and paper medical records; completing diagnostic coding and procedure coding; keeping patient information confidential. 

  • Maintain equipment for proper sterilization and functionality.  

Primary Duties: 

  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date patient records in the division’s electronic health records (EHR). 

  • Prepare exam rooms for patients including stocking with proper supplies and cleaning after each patient visit.  

  • Ensure patients comfort during the scan, especially in sensitive or emotional situations.  

  • Evaluate images to ensure they are clear and usable for diagnostic purposes. 

  • Maintain accurate and timely patient documentation in EHR system. 

  • Sterilize equipment and exam rooms after each patient visit. 

  • Communicate findings and provide detailed reports to physicians to further review.  

  • Coordinate and collaborate with team members. 

  • Other duties as assigned. 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: 

  • Strong knowledge of medical terminology, human anatomy and physiology, especially in the areas related to obstetrics and gynecology. 

  • Knowledge of how sound waves interact with tissues and how to optimize images based on varying patient conditions. 

  • Knowledge of the different types of ultrasounds (2D, 3D, doppler) and when to use each for optimal results. 

  • Knowledge of patient privacy laws safety protocols, and infection control standards. 

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to effectively communicate diagnostic findings to patients and physicians.  

  • Patient care skills to ensure the comfort of the patient and to provide emotional support.  

  • Ability to detect subtle abnormalities in ultrasound images and provide accurate information. 

  • Ability to stand for extended periods of time and position patients appropriately for scans. 

  • Ability to problem solve in real time to improve the quality of images and patient experience.  

Work Environment 

  • May require occasional travel or overtime. 

  • Work is performed in a professional healthcare setting. 

  • This position operates in an office setting. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers and filing cabinets.  

  • Possible exposure to communicable diseases, blood-borne pathogens, and toxic substances in the work environment. 

Physical Demands 

  • Ability to lift and move medical equipment and supplies up to (30) pounds  

  • Extended periods of standing and walking. 

  • Manual ability for handling instruments and equipment.  

Education 

  • Education: Associates degree or equivalent from 2-year college or technical school.  

  • Certifications: Diagnostic Medical Sonography 

  • State Licensure where applicable. 

  • Preferred education if needed.
