Job Summary

The Communications Coordinator serves as the primary liaison between the Office of Strategic Marketing & Communications (MarCom) and the College of Engineering & Computer Science as well as the Graduate School. Working collaboratively with college leadership, faculty, staff and the central MarCom team, the Communications Coordinator supports awareness, reputation, recruitment, retention, advancement, research visibility and internal communications through compelling storytelling and consistent messaging across digital, print and media channels. The Communications Coordinator will collaborate closely with MarCom colleagues to ensure a cohesive and engaging communication strategy.

Essential Functions (Responsibilities)

  • Develops engaging and informative written content, highlighting the achievements, research and activities of the College of Engineering & Computer Science (ECS) and the Graduate School through feature stories, press releases, ad copy and announcements.

  • Conducts interviews with faculty, students, alumni, donors and staff to gather content and personal stories that resonate with various target audiences.

  • Edits and proofreads content to ensure accuracy and adherence to university style guidelines.

  • Collaborates with teams in the Office of Strategic Marketing and Communications to coordinate projects related to web development, digital marketing, printed materials, social media, video production and publicity.

  • Serves as a liaison between the College of Engineering & Computer Science or Graduate School and the marketing team to ensure alignment of messaging and branding.

  • Execute email campaigns, including newsletters, announcements and invitations.

  • Update website to ensure accurate, timely and engaging content aligned with university and college priorities.

  • Manages project timelines, sets priorities and tracks progress to ensure deliverables are met on time and within budget.

  • Cultivates relationships with local, regional and national media outlets to increase the visibility of the College of Engineering & Computer Science.

  • Responds to news media inquiries and coordinates interviews with faculty and other subject matter experts.

  • Collaborates with the social media team to promote ECS content on university-sanctioned social media platforms.

  • Monitors social media channels for relevant discussions and engages with the online community.

  • Utilizes analytics tools to measure the effectiveness of communication efforts and make data-driven recommendations for improvements.

  • Prepares regular reports to demonstrate the impact of communications initiatives on the College of Engineering & Computer Science and the Graduate School.

  • Performs related responsibilities as required or assigned.

Required Qualifications

Equivalent Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in communications, media studies, marketing, journalism or related field, or equivalent work experience.

  • 2 to 4 years of experience in a related position.

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Exceptional writing, editing and proofreading skills with a keen eye for detail.

  • Working knowledge of science, technology, engineering and math disciplines.

  • Strong project management skills and the ability to juggle multiple tasks and priorities.

  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills for collaborating with various stakeholders.

  • Proficiency with Microsoft 365, email marketing platforms, content management systems. 
  • Knowledge of social media platforms and scheduling/monitoring tools and their use in promoting content.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in media relations and public relations.
  • Experience in higher education. 
  • Experience in STEM disciplines.
  • Experience with Adobe Creative Cloud and/or WordPress.

Special Job Dimensions

Sitting for extended periods of time. Traversing campus for meeting and events. May need to travel to North Campus or other facilities in Tulsa occasionally. May need to lift boxes of materials up to 20 pounds.
