Job Summary:

The News Anchor and Reporter is a full-time position that reports to the News Director and anchors local news segments during pm afternoon drive on NPR’s ā€˜All Things Considered’ or anchoring during morning drive on ā€˜Morning Edition,’ with occasional substitute anchoring on either position.Ā  The News Anchor and Reporter reports on planned events, spot news and enterprise stories for broadcast and websites.Ā  Produces feature stories for broadcast and websites and assists with updating station websites and sharing content via social media, including on weekend ā€œon callā€ rotations.Ā  They will field reports or anchor during special coverage events, such as elections, severe weather, or station outreach events. Provides reporting assistance and content to NPR and other national outlets.

Essential Functions (Responsibilities):

  • Writes and anchors six newscasts for broadcast, then posts to the station website, NPR One, and social media.

  • Gathers information and assets such as audio and images for reporting and stories, including monitoring and pulling relevant audio from meetings, hearings, and press conferences.

  • Researches, produces, reports, writes and voice assign stories for broadcast and station website, including spot news and feature length stories on a general assignment basis.

  • Updates station website and shares stories via social media every weekday morning, and on a weekend ā€œon callā€ rotation.

  • Covers breaking news and contributes to the NPR national network newscasts and programs, as needed.

  • Assists and collaborates with other public radio stations in Oklahoma, sharing created stories, and working collaboratively with other station personnel on special projects.

  • Hosts or co-hosts other station programs or events, as needed.

  • Represents KWGS and Public Radio Tulsa at station-sponsored events outside of the station, including candidate forums, and other station-sponsored events including membership and fundraising events.

  • Occasionally assists on-air fundraising efforts by producing fund drive promos, as available.

  • Performs related responsibilities as required or assigned.

Required Qualifications:

Knowledge/Skill/Ability

  • Familiarity with AP style required.

  • Proficient with Microsoft Suite.Ā 

  • Excellent verbal communication skills and speaking voice.Ā 

  • A collaborative team player, who can coordinate work effectively with employees, team members, and outside vendors.

  • Ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality.Ā 

  • High attention to detail, demonstrated practice of establishing effective priorities and meeting deadlines.

  • Proficient with Adobe Audition editing software.Ā Ā 

  • Basic HTML skills.

Equivalent Education/Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in journalism, mass communications, or related field required.

  • Must have 3 -5 years of time experience with a radio station, TV station, digital media, or newspaper producing daily news.

  • Experience with at least one content management system required.

  • Experience in public media news required.Ā Ā 

  • Valid driver’s license and ability to travel locally and within state for news coverage required.Ā 

  • Experience producing radio news reports preferred.Ā Ā 

  • Experience anchoring radio or TV newscasts preferred.Ā Ā
