Job Summary:
Under the direction of the Construction Manager, the Craftsman performs journeyman quality work in the construction, alteration, repair, forming, framing, and finishing of University facilities. Provides additional non-management supervision duties of outside vendors as assigned. Work is assigned and tracked using the Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS) and all work orders are assigned and downloaded to employee carried smart devices.
 

Essential Functions (Responsibilities):
Performs journeyman quality work in the construction, alteration, repair, forming, framing, and finishing of University facilities.
Provides excellent customer service and interpersonal skills, demonstrating professionalism, accuracy, and follow through in work assignments.
Performs other duties as assigned.
 

Knowledge/Skill/Ability
•    A thorough knowledge of general carpentry skills required; preference for skill sets that include proficiencies in some or all of the following: framing, drywall, cabinetry, and flooring / carpet installation.
•    Experience and proficiency in means and methods of construction detailing, demonstrated ability to correctly and safely use construction tools - including power tools.
•    Ability to read and interpret blueprints and to provide material takeoffs and assembling a bill of materials for use in project budgeting.
•    Ability to perform and manage technically complex projects using independent judgment and personal initiative.
•    Aptitude for organizing tasks, managing time and prioritizing projects.
•    Ability to multi-task efficiently in a fast-paced environment, prioritize and complete assigned work, and act with a sense of urgency.
•    Proficient with basic cell phone and/or tablet operation, including the ability to process and respond to emails and to maintain records on a smart device.
•    Strong oral and written communication skills.
•    Strong customer and interpersonal skills are essential.
•    Must exhibit sound judgment, tact, courtesy, and have excellent rapport with staff members.
•    Ability to develop strong relationships with other internal departments.
•    Excellent time management and task tracking skills.
 

Equivalent Education/Experience
•    Valid driver’s license required.
•    High school degree / GED and at least 3-5 years of previous experience in carpentry.
•    Prior experience in residential remodeling and / or apartment maintenance a plus.

Work requires ability to perform physically demanding tasks such as lifting (up to 40 pounds regularly and up to 75 pounds occasionally), bending (frequently), pushing (frequently), pulling (frequently), stooping (frequently), carrying (frequently and up to 50 pounds), working in tight/cramped spaces, climbing stairs and ladders while carrying, and lifting overhead (occasionally and up to 40 pounds); exposure to disagreeable odors and environmental conditions; ability to see and read; ability to hear and speak in order to receive and convey instructions. This position may be required to work overtime, nights, weekends or holidays to fulfill essential service requirements such as during inclement weather or other events.
