Job Summary
The Veterinary Assistant provides support to veterinarians and veterinary technicians by assisting with animal care, maintaining medical equipment, preparing examination rooms, and helping clients during visits. This role requires compassion, attention to detail, and the ability to work in a fast-paced environment with animals of various sizes and temperaments.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist veterinarians and veterinary technicians during exams and procedures
- Restrain animals safely during treatments and examinations
- Feed, bathe, exercise, and monitor animals
- Clean and disinfect cages, kennels, examination rooms, and surgical areas
- Prepare instruments and equipment for procedures
- Collect laboratory samples such as urine, stool, or blood specimens
- Administer medications or vaccinations under supervision (as allowed by state regulations)
- Maintain accurate medical records and update patient information
- Schedule appointments and communicate with pet owners
- Monitor animal behavior and report changes to veterinary staff
- Stock supplies and maintain inventory
Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED required
- Previous animal handling or veterinary experience preferred
- Certification as a veterinary technician is a plus
- Basic knowledge of animal care and medical terminology
- Strong communication and customer service skills
- Ability to lift and restrain animals safely
- Comfortable working with animals, including sick or injured pets
