Responsibilities

  • Works under the limited supervision of nursing and medical staff and with full proficiency to perform all duties of a PCT, which include assisting patients with daily activities such as bathing, dressing, eating, and other ADLs.
  • Observes patients’ progress to prepare and disseminate reports to the Registered Nurse or other medical staff.
  • Obtains and records patients' vital signs and collects specimens for lab tests.
  • Provides basic patient transport and housekeeping duties.
  • Measures and records patients' intake and output and other measurements in accordance with unit routines, assists patients with range of motion, and draws blood.
  • Additionally, assists in providing treatments to patients, performs technical procedures such as feeding tube and catheter administration, suture/staple removal, splinting of extremities, and performs ECGs as ordered.
  • Coordinates daily activities for assigned unit to include general clerical and administrative support and participates in performance improvement activities to enhance and maintain personal and department qualifications and standards of performance. 

Qualifications

Job Requirements: 

  • High School diploma or equivalent. 
  • Completion of approved CNA or PCT certification is required, or may be in the senior year of nursing school with less than one semester to complete the nursing program.  
  • For Emergency room departments – completion of an approved EMT Basic certification may be substituted for CNA/PCT certification.  Paramedic license may fulfill all certification requirements.  
  • Must maintain active certification within the State of Texas.  
  • BLS certification must be obtained within 14 days of hire or transfer into the role and prior to providing direct patient care.

  • Training, education, and competencies completed annually for any additional duties. 
  • Basic computer skills. 
  • Competent to use patient care-related machines and equipment. 
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills. 
  • Active listening skills. 
  • Good problem-solving skills. 
  • Strong time management skills. 
  • Ability to think strategically and act tactically. 
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks at the same time. 
  • Ability to embrace the client relationship. 
  • Demonstrates good teamwork. 

Preferred Job Requirements:  

  • 5 years' experience in acute or long-term care.  
  • Demonstrated proficiency in phlebotomy.  
  • Competent to perform in at least two general areas of practice (cross-trained and cross-competent to cover more than one hospital service, role, or function).
