The General Manager is responsible for leading through Petco’s vision of “Healthier Pets. Happier People. Better World.” in order to develop a high-performing team that consistently delivers top-line sales growth while maintaining a focus on the welfare, health, and proper care of all animals. The GM leads a team Pet Care Center managers, leaders and partners and is accountable for all aspects of managing a single Pet Care Center. The General Manager drives their business through a focus on people (talent acquisition, training, and development), performance (guest service, sales, and expense control), and process (standard operating procedures and policies), which will result in overall profitability. This position requires a passion for pets, ability to inspire and lead a team, focus on process excellence, a drive for results. The GM regularly exercises discretion and independent judgment as they execute all Pet Care Center activity to create the best possible partner, guest, and pet experience. Responsibilities include building a team that embodies the Petco brand by delivering exceptional service and driving guest loyalty; attracting, hiring, and retaining a diverse team of top talent; training, coaching, and developing leaders and hourly Pet Care Center partners; creating a professional environment that inspires growth and engagement; leading and implementing a positive culture of teamwork and inclusion; ensuring quick and courteous service to all guests; managing partner performance; meeting or exceeding sales, profitability, and operational goals; scheduling labor hours and payroll; reviewing financial and operational reports; marketing the Pet Care Center and overseeing community events; ensuring proper health and welfare of animals; managing merchandise pricing, display, and inventory; completing accounting, inventory, and payroll paperwork; maintaining store appearance and safety; protecting pets and merchandise; opening and closing the store according to policies; modeling inspiring leadership; promoting safety; fostering a collaborative culture; prioritizing talent development; and representing Petco’s brand with strong culture and positive leadership. Education and experience requirements include a high school diploma or equivalent, proficiency in business and finance acumen, analysis and problem-solving skills, communication and computer skills, three or more years of management experience, preferably in retail, and a genuine interest in animals. The GM supervises a team of leaders and all Pet Care Center partners. The work environment is mostly indoors with some physical activity and occasional travel. The position requires a valid motor vehicle license.
