NATURE OF WORK:
 Under general supervision, monitors inmate activities to provide safety and security for all Franklin County Adult Detention Center inmates and visitors; assists inmates with medical needs; provides inmates transportation for courts and other detention facilities. Performs law enforcement duties in accordance with the mission, goals, and objectives of the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office and in compliance with Federal, State, and local laws and statutes.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
 The following duties ARE NOT intended to serve as a comprehensive list of all duties performed by all employees in this classification, only a representative summary of the primary duties and responsibilities. Incumbent(s) may not be required to perform all duties listed and may be required to perform additional, position-specific duties.
 
 Processes inmate into the detention facility; updates and maintains inmate records and documents.
 
 Operates doors, cameras, and alarms from the control center.
 
 Escorts inmates to court; transports inmates to other facilities as required.
 
 Searches inmates and facilities for contraband; receives, inspects, and processes inmate mail and removes contraband as necessary.
 
 Conducts and oversees inmate visitation.
 
 Distributes meals and medications to inmates; supervises meals.
 
 Maintains accurate chronological reports.
 
 Enforces laws governed by the Revised Statutes of the State of Missouri and upholds the U.S.Constitution.
 
 Provides emergency assistance and responds to dispatched calls for service.
 
 De-escalates potentially violent situations; applies reasonable physical force when intervening in conflicts.
 
 Protects crime scenes; gathers information, conducts interviews and interrogations; completes investigations and follow-ups.
 
 Serves arrest warrants and other civil documents; enforces protection orders.
 
 Conducts search and seizures; protects and collects evidence; makes arrests and transports prisoners.
 
 Writes and reviews reports; prepares warrant applications; prepares documents for court appearances.
 
 Provides credible testimony under oath in court.
 
 Operates a vehicle in all weather conditions.
 
 Uses radio for transmitting and receiving communications.
 
 Participates in maintaining office vehicles and equipment.
 
 Maintains mandated training requirements of the state and sheriff’s office.
 
 Maintains physical fitness level necessary to complete assigned duties.
 
 Maintains positive community and interpersonal relations.
 
 Performs other duties as assigned.

 

WORKING ENVIRONMENT / PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
 Work is performed in the detention center and in the field; working environment may require strenuous physical efforts and exposure to dangerous persons, situations, tools, and equipment. Exposure to extreme weather conditions is possible. Working shift is flexible, during days, evenings, and nights; rotating shifts including weekends and holidays as scheduled.


 EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS:
 High School Diploma or GED equivalent; Must possess a valid Missouri Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) license; Must possess a valid Missouri driver license; Must be a Missouri resident; must successfully complete corrections certification through detention officer training; additional training and/or other specialized certifications may be required.

 KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS REQUIRED:

 County and Department policies and procedures.
 
 Forensic interviewing and interrogation methods.
 
 Evidence collection and handling protocols and regulations.
 
 Investigative methods and techniques.
 
 Federal, State, and local laws, statutes, and ordinances.
 
 Firearm safety regulations, procedures, and practices.
 
 Radio communication procedures and practices.
 
 Basic knowledge for operating computers and electronics.
 
 Other knowledge may be required.
 Skills in:
 
 Typing and entering data with speed and accuracy.
 
 Hand-to-hand combat and defensive techniques and tactics.
 
 Firearm proficiency.
 
 Emergency vehicle operation.
 
 Communication clearly both verbally and in writing.
 
 Collecting and analyzing evidence, commensurate with job duties.
 
 Conducting interviews and interrogations.
 
 Determining and applying the proper use of force.
