Responsibilities
We are a rapidly expanding division of the W. R. Berkley Corporation looking to add a motivated self-starter to our Excess Energy Underwriting team.
Â
The Excess Energy Underwriter in conjunction with senior underwriters, will be responsible for monitoring renewal production, profitability, and maintaining agency relationships, along with opportunities to write new business in the future. The Excess Energy Underwriter will utilize underwriting expertise and authority guidelines to independently make decisions within granted letter of authority on renewal accounts.

- Review and underwrite renewals based upon authority granted and provides guidance as needed to associate underwriting team.
- Establishes terms and pricing to be provided.
- Negotiates terms with wholesale brokers.
- Review and underwrite fast track renewals based upon authority granted and seeks guidance as needed from senior underwriting team
- Makes sound risk and pricing decisions that achieve profitable loss ratios.
- Document underwriting file to support acceptability and pricing in accordance with company guidelines.
- Achieve designated customer service standards.
- Provide detailed guidance to operations team to ensure policy is delivered consistent with quoted terms and conditions in accordance with established guidelines relative to policy construction.
- Review all post-transaction requests for acceptability up to the authority granted.
- Review inspections to confirm accounts written are consistent with preliminary underwriting information and take action needed based on found information.
- Utilize various underwriting tools to determine acceptable risk characteristics, accurate classifications, insurance to value, calculate rates, etc.
- Proficient coverage knowledge in Energy Casualty Business
- Ability to take on special projects as needed to advance underwriting knowledge across underwriting departments.
- Consults with Energy department on territorial expertise regarding market conditions, trends, and state-specific nuances that may impact underwriting.
- Effectively communicates (written/verbal) information to both internal and external customers to ensure our standards of excellence are maintained.

Additional Responsibilities
- Provide support to the underwriting audit process.
- Act as a role model promoting the company brand and culture.
- Assist with special projects and tasks, as directed.
- Ability to travel, as needed.
Qualifications
- Minimum of 3 years of commercial lines experience. Excess and Surplus lines experience preferred.
- Strong organizational skills with the ability manage deadlines and volumes effectively.
- Proven track record of working under pressure in a fast-paced environment.
- Must be a collaborative team player and ability to relate and communicate with all members of the organization.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to exhibit informal leadership across the team.
- Basic knowledge of computer programs in a Windows environment, including Word, Excel, Outlook, etc

Education Requirement
- Bachelor's Degree or equivalent insurance experience required.
