The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) School of Veterinary Medicine invites applications for a full-time, 12-month, tenure-track faculty position as Professor – Research. The primary emphasis of this position is on research and scholarly activity. The faculty member is responsible for developing, leading, and sustaining an independent and/or collaborative research program that advances veterinary medicine, biomedical sciences, animal health, public health, agricultural sciences, and One Health initiatives aligned with the mission of the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES). This position supports UMES’s 1890 land-grant mission through research excellence, student mentorship, and strategic growth of the School of Veterinary Medicine’s research enterprise.
Salary Information
Salary range: $150,000 – $190,000 annually, commensurate with academic rank and experience.

Essential Responsibilities:
• Develop and sustain an independent, externally funded research program
aligned with School strategic priorities.
• Secure competitive extramural funding (e.g., NIH, USDA, NSF, DoD, FDA,
foundations, industry).
• Publish research findings in peer-reviewed scientific journals and present at
regional, national, and international conferences.
• Collaborate with faculty across UMES schools and external institutions to
advance interdisciplinary research initiatives.
• Mentor DVM and graduate students in research design, data analysis,
scientific writing, and dissemination of findings.
• Serve as major advisor or committee member for graduate students, as
applicable.
• Contribute to the professional curriculum through lectures or courses in
research methods, evidence-based medicine, epidemiology, or related
areas.
• Ensure compliance with institutional, federal, and state research
regulations (IACUC, IRB, biosafety, data security).
• Participate in development of research infrastructure, laboratory resources,
and accreditation-related activities.
• each veterinary foundational biomedical sciences course in the DVM
curriculum.
• Serve on School and University committees and engage in professional
service activities.
• Perform other duties as assigned in support of the School and University
mission.
Required Qualifications:
• Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM/VMD), PhD, or equivalent doctoral
degree in veterinary medicine, biomedical sciences, animal sciences, public
health, or a related discipline.
• Demonstrated record of peer-reviewed scholarly productivity.
• Evidence of securing extramural research funding and established record
of independent federal funding.
• Experience in research design, statistical analysis, and scientific
dissemination.
• Commitment to mentoring students and fostering an inclusive academic
environment.
Preferences: (Qualifications)
• Specialty board certification by the AVMA Board of Specialists (if
applicable).
• Experience in translational, clinical, agricultural, population health,
infectious disease, food
animal, comparative medicine, or One Health research.
• Experience supervising students or postdoctoral scholars.
• Demonstrated interdisciplinary and collaborative research experience.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
• Knowledge of contemporary laboratory principles and diagnostic
methodologies.
• Strong written and oral communication skills.
• Ability to work collaboratively in a developing research program.
• Must be able to meet institutional safety and biosafety standards.
Physical Demands:
• May require extended periods of standing, bending, stooping, sitting at
desk.
• May require lifting.
• Requires communication with a variety of constituents externally and
internally.
• Requires operation of a variety of office equipment.
