Organization's Summary Statement:The Department of English, Languages and Media Studies (ELMS) at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) seeks Adjunct faculty. Resumes will be reviewed as needed for each semester.

For Fall 2026, the department seeks candidates who can teach on campus in Princess Anne, Maryland. We are specifically seeking instructors for composition, speech, and technical writing courses. Occasionally the department might need instructors who can teach online. Qualified applicants may be asked to teach courses in our Literature, Digital Humanities, or Media Studies programs as needed. Successful candidates will demonstrate an understanding of the mission and value of an HBCU education and be able to speak fluently on the dynamics of race, gender, and social inclusivity in their teaching. Responsibilities:
•Teaching responsibilities may include courses in Composition 101 and 102,
Technical Writing, and Speech.
•Qualified instructors may also teach other courses as needed in our literature,
digital humanities, English education, or digital media tracks.
Qualifications:
•Master’s degree with at least 18 graduate credits in the discipline. Exceptional
candidates with a BA in the discipline and 5+ years of industry/professional
experience in the discipline may be considered for production-oriented
courses.
• At least one year of college teaching experience in the discipline as Instructor
of Record
• Experience teaching with a Learning Management System (such as Canvas,
Blackboard, etc.)
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
•Ability to use technology in the classroom to enhance student learning.
•A strong commitment to teaching excellence.
•Ability to instruct students of varying preparation and abilities.
•Excellent interpersonal and cultural competency skills and demonstrated ability
to communicate professionally with colleagues, peers, and students.
•Ability to create inclusive learning experiences that will help undergraduate
students develop the skills of the discipline.
•Ability to assess student performance and learning.
•Willingness to implement the department’s standardized syllabus as needed.
Physical Demands:
•May require extended periods of standing, bending, sitting at desk.
•May require lifting.
•Requires communication with a variety of constituents externally and internally.
•Requires operation of a variety of office equipment
Preferences:
•Three years of college teaching experience in an English-related discipline
•Experience with Canvas
