Position Summary


The Design Engineer, Enclosure Specials is responsible for evaluating customer special-order requirements and developing cost‑effective design solutions that utilize standard Rittal products with minimal modification. This role involves creating detailed CAD models and drawings, supporting engineering changes, collaborating with cross-functional teams, and ensuring customer satisfaction through accurate and timely engineering deliverables.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Analyze customer requirements and develop practical, cost‑effective solutions using existing products, components, and limited modifications.
  • Create detailed CAD designs and production drawings for modified standard Rittal products (“Rittal Specials”).
  • Utilize Autodesk Inventor and AutoCAD for design activities, including manipulation of archived and customer-supplied files.
  • Work directly with customers and sales teams to clarify requirements and ensure solutions meet expectations.
  • Create and review SAP material masters and bills of materials (BOMs) for special‑order products.
  • Use SAP to access and modify archived material and BOM data as needed.
  • Execute ECN (Engineering Change Notice) release processes to support Manufacturing Engineering, Accounting, Sourcing, Purchasing, and Production Control.
  • Collaborate with vendors, fabrication teams, and assembly associates to support the production of Rittal Specials.
  • Support development, documentation, and compliance with ISO, corporate, and engineering standards and procedures.
  • Work effectively and professionally with management, peers, and production teams.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.


Physical Requirements
  • Ability to sit for extended periods (up to 8 hours) and use a computer for most of the workday.
  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, twist, and reach as needed during the shift.
  • Ability to lift to 25–50 lbs. to waist height and up to 25 lbs. overhead occasionally.

Mental Requirements
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and adapt quickly to changing priorities.
  • Strong multitasking skills and the ability to learn new office procedures and software.
  • High attention to detail with strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to troubleshoot issues, research solutions, and work independently with minimal supervision.

Safety Requirements
  • Must wear required PPE, including:
    • Safety‑toed footwear
    • Safety glasses with side shields
    • Hearing protection
    • Additional PPE as required by task or environment

Knowledge & Experience Requirements
  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or Mechanical Engineering Technology and 2+ years of product design experience
    OR
    Associate degree in Mechanical Engineering Technology and 4+ years of product design experience.
  • Proficiency with 3D and 2D CAD tools, including Autodesk Inventor, Autodesk Vault, and AutoCAD.
  • Experience in sheet‑metal fabrication and assembly processes, including CNC forming, MIG/TIG welding, and metal finishing methods (powder coat, e‑coat, etc.).
  • Preferred experience with electrical enclosure design, UL/CE regulatory requirements, and NEMA/IP/IEC/ANSI performance standards.
  • Experience with ECN processes and material master/BOM creation in SAP or AS400-based MRP systems.
  • Familiarity with ISO 9001 documentation.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint).
  • Experience with electronic data transfer (IGS, DXF) and file‑transfer methods (FTP, Internet).

Work Environment
Work is performed in both office and manufacturing floor environments, requiring flexibility to move between the two as needed.
